Demulsification Performance and Mechanism of Tertiary Amine Polymer-Grafted Magnetic Nanoparticles in Surfactant-Free Oil-in-Water Emulsion

Ting Lu et al.

Summary: This study synthesized and evaluated three tertiary amine polymer-grafted magnetic nanoparticles (MNPs) for their demulsification performance. The results showed that high positive charge density and superior interfacial activity of MNPs could cause partial oil droplet re-dispersion, leading to a lower magnetic separation efficiency and narrower demulsification window. Wide demulsification windows were observed when MNPs carried lower positive charge density or weak interfacial activity. The recycling experiment demonstrated their satisfactory recyclability.

Application of imidazolium based ionic liquids grafted on microcrystalline cellulose as demulsifiers for water in crude oil (W/O) emulsions

Hamed Sadighian et al.

Summary: The separation of water and oil from water-in-oil emulsion is crucial for its transportation and refining. Ionic liquids and their derivatives have been studied as effective agents for breaking emulsions. In this study, microcrystalline cellulose grafted with imidazolium-based ionic liquids (MCC@IM-ILs) was synthesized and evaluated as eco-friendly surface-active agents for water separation from crude oil. The structure of the synthesized compounds was confirmed through various characterization techniques. MCC@IM-ILs showed acceptable dehydration efficiency to demulsify different water-in-oil emulsions. The concentration, alkyl chain length, and counter-anion of MCC@IM-ILs played a key role in the separation process.

Stabilization mechanism and chemical demulsification of water-in-oil and oil-in-water emulsions in petroleum industry: A review

Duo Wang et al.

Summary: Emulsions frequently encountered in petroleum production pose technical challenges and increase costs. Chemical treatment with demulsifiers plays a vital role in destabilizing the complex emulsions, but developing effective and cost-efficient demulsifiers remains challenging. This review systematically examines the stabilization mechanisms of emulsions and categorizes demulsifiers for water-in-oil and oil-in-water emulsions, providing insights into efficient demulsification methods.

Evolution of adsorbed layers of asphaltenes at oil-water interfaces: A novel experimental protocol

Sefatallah Ashoorian et al.

Summary: This study introduces novel experimental protocols to investigate the evolution of adsorbed asphaltene layer to a film of aggregates at a model oil/water interface by means of dynamic interfacial tension (IFT) and dilational surface rheology measurements. It is found that the transformation of an asphaltene adsorbed layer to a rigid film depends not only on asphaltene concentration but also on aging time and interfacial area perturbations. These findings suggest that standard deviation from Young-Laplace shape fitting can be a rigorous parameter to reveal the properties of the interfacial asphaltene film, which cannot be recognized by regular IFT measurements.

Promising grafting strategies on cellulosic backbone through radical polymerization processes - A review

Maneesh Kumar et al.

Summary: Cellulose is an abundant organic substance with various applications such as paperboard production, drug delivery, and food packaging due to its bio-renewable and bio-degradable properties. Radical polymerization is commonly used to create cellulose derivatives with improved properties, by reacting cellulose with small organic fragments like methacrylate and styrene. Initiators like Fenton's reagent and controlled radical polymerization methods are utilized to generate free radicals on the cellulose backbone for grafting purposes, allowing for the development of functional cellulose with enhanced physical and chemical properties.

Synthesis, characterization, and demulsification of water in crude oil emulsion via a corn oil-based demulsifier

M. A. Saad et al.

Summary: A corn oil-based demulsifier was successfully synthesized and showed high separation efficiency of 98% in demulsifying water-in-oil emulsions. The separation efficacy increased with longer settling time, higher demulsifier dosage, and under higher temperature conditions. Additionally, the interfacial tension decreased with increasing demulsifier dose.
