Improving the spatial prediction of soil organic carbon using environmental covariates selection: A comparison of a group of environmental covariates

Mojtaba Zeraatpisheh et al.

Summary: In this study, the performance of predicting soil organic carbon (SOC) in an arid agroecosystem in Iran using different datasets and machine learning algorithms was compared. The results showed that the Cubist model performed the best with the MCC dataset and the combined dataset of MCC and remote sensing time-series (RST), while the RF model showed better results for the RST dataset. Soil properties were found to be the main factors influencing SOC variation in the MCC and combined datasets, while NDVI was the most controlling factor in the RST dataset. The study suggested that time-series vegetation indices may not significantly improve SOC prediction accuracy, but combining MCC and RST datasets could produce SOC spatial maps with lower uncertainty.

Long-term application of swine manure and sewage sludge differently impacts antibiotic resistance genes in soil and phyllosphere

Xue-Mei Han et al.

Summary: The long-term application of organic fertilizers has different effects on the spread of antibiotic resistance genes (ARGs) in soil and phyllosphere. The prevalence of ARGs is more influenced by the application of swine manure and sewage sludge in the phyllosphere than in soil. Bacterial taxa from swine manure and sewage sludge can survive in soil but have little survival ability in the phyllosphere.

Subsurface organic ameliorant plus polyethylene mulching strengthened soil organic carbon by altering saline soil aggregate structure and regulating the fungal community

Hongyuan Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of subsurface organic ameliorant plus polyethylene mulching on saline soil improvement in China. The results showed that the subsurface organic ameliorant increased soil organic carbon (SOC) content directly and indirectly through soil aggregates protection. In contrast, polyethylene mulching reduced SOC content. The combination of subsurface organic ameliorant and polyethylene mulching significantly increased SOC content through direct carbon input, soil aggregates protection, and microbial regulation.

Organic amendments facilitate soil carbon sequestration via organic carbon accumulation and mitigation of inorganic carbon loss

Yanfang Tian et al.

Summary: Both SOC and SIC are important carbon reservoirs involved in the global carbon cycle. Fertilization, especially organic amendments, can increase SOC sequestration, while nitrogen fertilization-induced soil acidification leads to significant SIC loss in alkaline soil.

Soil aggregate modulates microbial ecological adaptations and community assemblies in agricultural soils

Hao Liao et al.

Summary: Soil aggregates play a crucial role in providing heterogeneous microenvironments for soil microbiome and ecological processes. This study investigated the assembly processes of microbial communities in different aggregate sizes and found that geographic locations and aggregate sizes had significant effects on microbial composition. The study also revealed the importance of nutrient variables in shaping microbial community assembly, with different variables having distinct effects on different aggregate-size fractions. Moreover, the study demonstrated that fertilization had varying effects on microbial community assembly processes across aggregate sizes. These findings highlight the vulnerability of microbial assembly and functional traits in large aggregate-size fractions to nutrient changes and suggest their potential use as biological indicators for sustainable soil management.

Poly-γ-glutamic acid bioproduct improves the coastal saline soil mainly by assisting nitrogen conservation during salt-leaching process

Lihua Chen et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the bio-product poly-gamma-glutamic acid (PGAB) produced by solid-state fermentation effectively conserves nitrogen in soil during the salt-leaching process. It reduces soil salinity and increases soil nitrogen content significantly, while also boosting microbial biomass and algae biomass. Additionally, PGAB improves soil physical properties, such as soil aggregation and erosion resistance.

Sustained effects of one-time sewage sludge addition on rice yield and heavy metals accumulation in salt-affected mudflat soil

Wengang Zuo et al.

Summary: This study found that one-time sludge input can reduce soil salinity and increase soil fertility in salt-affected mudflats, promoting sustained rice production. Although sludge addition can increase metal accumulation in mudflat soil and uptake by rice, the concentrations of metals in rice grains remained below safety limits.

Soil water-stable aggregates and microbial community under long-term tillage in black soil of Northern China

Yanhua Hong et al.

Summary: Long-term frequent tillage can lead to degradation of black soil and serious soil erosion, impacting soil microbial communities and structure. Results show that long-term tillage increases bacterial diversity, reduces fungal diversity, and fungi are more susceptible to tillage. Furthermore, long-term tillage decreases the proportion of WSAs larger than 1 mm in soil, while increasing the content of available phosphorus and potassium in soil.

Soil aggregate size-dependent relationships between microbial functional diversity and multifunctionality

Shun Han et al.

Summary: Soil stability and aggregates are crucial for soil fertility and microbial diversity, affecting ecosystem functions and services. This study found that soil aggregates play a key role in driving microbial functional gene diversity and ecosystem functions, with organic fertilizer enhancing the relationship between gene diversity and multifunctionality, while inorganic fertilizer reduces it. The findings also suggest that differences in resource availability within soil aggregates influence ecosystem functions, highlighting the importance of soil aggregation for regulating soil nutrition and microbial diversity.

Sewage sludge application enhances soil properties and rice growth in a salt-affected mudflat soil

Yuhua Shan et al.

Summary: Enhancement of soil fertility through sewage sludge application can mitigate the negative effects of increased salinity and promote plant growth in salt-affected mudflat soil under waterlogged conditions. Soil pH was reduced and OC, nitrogen, and phosphorus content increased with sewage sludge application, although electric conductivity also increased with higher application rates.

Yunlong Li et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of sewage sludge application on the microbial community structure and functional diversity of coastal mudflat soil. Results showed that sewage sludge amendment significantly improved both structural and functional diversities of bacterial microbiome, enriching bacterial groups involved in carbon and nitrogen cycling processes.
