Lack of Evidence for Ribavirin Treatment of Lassa Fever in Systematic Review of Published and Unpublished Studies

Hung-Yuan Cheng et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed the effectiveness of ribavirin for treating Lassa fever and found a lack of robust evidence supporting its use. The existing studies had significant biases and more high-quality clinical trials are needed to elucidate the effectiveness of ribavirin.

REGN-EB3: First Approval

Anthony Markham

Summary: REGN-EB3, a combination of three fully-human monoclonal antibodies targeting Ebola virus glycoprotein, was recently approved by the US FDA based on the PALM study conducted during an Ebola outbreak in the Democratic Republic of Congo. This marks a significant milestone in the development of REGN-EB3 as a treatment for Zaire ebolavirus infection in adult and paediatric patients.

PREVAIL IV: A Randomized, Double-Blind, 2-Phase, Phase 2 Trial of Remdesivir vs Placebo for Reduction of Ebola Virus RNA in the Semen of Male Survivors

Elizabeth S. Higgs et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the impact of remdesivir on persistent Ebola virus RNA in semen. The results showed similar mean assay negativity rates between the remdesivir and placebo arms during the treatment phase, but higher rates in the remdesivir arm during the follow-up phase. Overall, the 5-day regimen of remdesivir demonstrated good tolerability and reduction in seminal Ebola virus RNA persistence.
