In 2022, it became a Public Health Emergency of International Concern due to its unprecedented global spread outside Africa. The disease primarily spreads through close intimate contact, with most cases diagnosed among men who have sex with men.

Late diagnosis of HIV: An updated consensus definition

Summary: In recent years, there has been an increase in HIV testing frequency, leading to more early diagnoses with low CD4 counts. A European expert group gathered in spring 2022 to revise the current definition of late HIV presentation. The survey results revealed that 83% of the surveyed countries captured CD4 count and/or AIDS at diagnosis through national surveillance. Reclassifying individuals with recent infection will help identify populations at high risk of poor HIV outcomes and areas for intervention.

Human monkeypox virus infection in women and non-binary individuals during the 2022 outbreaks: a global case series

Summary: This study examines the epidemiological and clinical characteristics of monkeypox virus infection in cisgender and transgender women as well as non-binary individuals assigned female sex at birth. The findings suggest that the disease has similar effects on these populations as it does on men, with anal and genital lesions being prominent features.

Clinical presentation and virological assessment of confirmed human monkeypox virus cases in Spain: a prospective observational cohort study

Summary: This study investigated the clinical and virological characteristics of cases of human monkeypox in Spain. The findings showed that monkeypox caused genital, perianal, and oral lesions and complications including proctitis and tonsillitis. Lesion swabs showed the highest viral loads, suggesting close contact as the dominant transmission route in the current outbreak.

Demographic and clinical characteristics of confirmed human monkeypox virus cases in individuals attending a sexual health centre in London, UK: an observational analysis

Summary: Autochthonous community monkeypox virus transmission is currently observed among MSM in the UK. High proportion of concomitant STIs and frequent anogenital symptoms suggest transmissibility through local inoculation during close skin-to-skin or mucosal contact, during sexual activity. Additional resources are needed to support sexual health and other specialist services in managing this condition. A review of the case definition and better understanding of viral transmission routes are necessary for the development of infection control policies, education and prevention strategies, and contact tracing.

Summary: This report describes 528 cases of monkeypox in 16 countries. Common clinical findings include rash, mucosal lesions, fever, lethargy, and lymphadenopathy. Few patients required hospitalization.

A large multi-country outbreak of monkeypox across 41 countries in the WHO European Region, 7 March to 23 August 2022

Summary: Since the first non-travel-associated cluster of monkeypox cases was reported by the United Kingdom in May 2022, 41 countries in the WHO European Region have reported 21,098 cases and two deaths by August 23, 2022. Nowcasting indicates a plateauing in case notifications. The majority of cases (97%) are among men who have sex with men (MSM), and the symptoms present as atypical rash illness. The main mode of transmission is through close contact during sexual activities. Few cases are reported among women and children. Targeted interventions for high-risk groups are necessary to halt further transmission.

Immune Response to Hepatitis B Virus Vaccine Among People Living With HIV: A Meta-Analysis

Summary: A meta-analysis study found that a double dose and multiple injections of the HBV vaccine were more effective in inducing immune responses in people living with HIV compared to the standard dose.
