Influences of temperature and moisture histories on the hydrostructural characteristics of a clay during desiccation

Zhong Han et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the influence of temperature and moisture histories on the hydrostructural characteristics of clay during desiccation. The experimental observations show that compaction-induced structural pores collapse during cycles of freeze-thaw, wetting-drying, and wetting-drying-freeze-thaw, and are replaced by microcracks induced by wetting-drying and freeze-thaw cycles. The amount and distribution of textural pores are similar in clay specimens with aggregated and dispersed structures.

Structural, volumetric and water retention behaviors of a compacted clay upon saline intrusion and freeze-thaw cycles

Jianguo Lin et al.

Summary: This study investigates the evolution of a compacted clay's structural, volumetric, and water retention behaviors during soaking and desiccation, considering the influences of freeze-thaw cycles and saline intrusion. The results show that both freeze-thaw cycles and saline intrusion significantly affect the clay's microstructure and water retention characteristics. FT-induced cracks reduce the clay's swelling and shrinkage potentials, while salinization suppresses the clay's swelling and alters its water retention properties.

Assessment of Freeze-Thaw Cycles Impact on Flexural Tensile Characteristics of Asphalt Mixture in Cold Regions

Cidan Duojie et al.

Summary: The low average temperature, large temperature difference, and continual freeze-thaw cycles significantly affect the mechanical properties of asphalt pavement. Increased freeze-thaw cycles result in decreased flexural tensile strength and strain, with the flexural properties deteriorating sharply initially but stabilizing after 15-21 cycles. Applying a 5.5% optimum asphalt-aggregate ratio or slightly larger AC-13 gradation improves the mixtures' low-temperature bending characteristics.
