Subacute Cadmium Exposure Induces Necroptosis in Swine Lung via Influencing Th1/Th2 Balance

Wenyue Zhang et al.

Summary: This study reveals that subacute Cd exposure is closely associated with necroptosis in swine lung. The mechanisms may involve Th1/Th2 imbalance, down-regulation of miR-181-5p, increased TNF-alpha expression, and activation of the NF-kappa B/NLRP3 and JAK/STAT pathways and RIPK1/RIPK3/MLKL axis.

Polyethylene microplastics trigger cell apoptosis and inflammation via inducing oxidative stress and activation of the NLRP3 inflammasome in carp gills

Jingwen Cao et al.

Summary: Microplastics cause damage to aquatic organisms, particularly the gills which are among the first tissues to be affected. This study found that polyethylene microplastics induce inflammation, vascular remodeling, mucus cell proliferation, oxidative stress, cell apoptosis, and inflammatory immune responses in the gills. These findings provide a new target for preventing toxin-induced gill injury from polyethylene microplastics.

TBBPA induced ROS overproduction promotes apoptosis and inflammation by inhibiting autophagy in mice lung

Yanhe Zhang et al.

Summary: Tetrabromobisphenol A (TBBPA), a non-degradable environmental pollutant, is released into the air during the production, use, and recycling of plastic products. Respiratory exposure is the main route of TBBPA inhalation. However, research on the respiratory system damage caused by TBBPA is limited. This study aimed to investigate the mechanism of TBBPA toxicity to the lungs. Results showed that exposure to TBBPA led to inflammatory cell infiltration and tissue structure damage in the lungs of mice. Increased levels of ROS and MDA, as well as inhibition of T-AOC, GSH-Px, CAT, and SOD activities, were observed in lung tissue with TBBPA exposure. The expression of autophagy-related factors Beclin-1, P62, LC3-II, ATG5, and ATG7 decreased. Activation of the NF kappa B/TNF-alpha pathway indicated inflammation. Increased expression of Bax, caspase3, caspase7, caspase 9, decreased expression of Bcl-2, and activation of the apoptosis pathway were observed. The autophagy inducer rapamycin could reverse the adverse effects of inflammation and apoptosis. Together, TBBPA inhibits autophagy-induced pneumonia and apoptosis by overproducing ROS.

The protective effect of selenoprotein M on non-alcoholic fatty liver disease: the role of the AMPKα1-MFN2 pathway and Parkin mitophagy

Jingzeng Cai et al.

Summary: This study reveals the role of selenoprotein M (SELENOM) in maintaining mitophagy in high-fat diet-induced non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). SELENOM downregulation aggravates hepatic steatosis, inflammation, and fibrosis, while reducing mitophagy and increasing mitochondrial apoptosis. SELENOM overexpression activates Parkin-mediated mitophagy, reducing mitochondrial apoptosis and removing damaged mitochondria.

Melatonin administration alleviates 2,2,4,4-tetra-brominated diphenyl ether (PBDE-47)-induced necroptosis and secretion of inflammatory factors via miR-140-5p/TLR4/NF-.B axis in fish kidney cells

Summary: This study developed fish kidney cell models of PBDE-47 poisoning and/or MEL treatment and found that PBDE-47 exposure resulted in increased cytoplasmic Ca2+ concentration, decreased miR-140-5p miRNA level, upregulation of TLR4 and NF-B, triggering of necroptosis and secretion of inflammatory factors. MEL could alleviate PBDE-47-induced toxicity through the regulation of calcium channels and restoration of the miR-140-5p/TLR4/NF-B axis.
