An overview of clay-polymer nanocomposites containing bioactive compounds for food packaging applications

Dorsaf Cheikh et al.

Summary: By functionalizing clay-polymer nanocomposites with natural bioactive compounds found in plants, the physicochemical and functional properties of resulting films and coatings can be improved for potential applications in food protection. The presence of clays in food packaging provides advantages such as stabilizing bioactive compounds, controlled release, moisture barrier properties, and enhancing mechanical properties of the polymer matrix. This review highlights insights on functionalizing clay-based nanocomposites with natural additives extracted from plants for food quality and safety applications.

Thermal decomposition behavior and flame retardancy of bioepoxies, their blends and composites: A comprehensive review

Gopika Venu et al.

Summary: Biobased epoxies are gaining interest as potential substitutes for commercial resins, with properties comparable to those of commercial resins. However, their low flame retardancy limits their utility in certain applications. Current research focuses on addressing these issues and classifying different flame retardants for biobased epoxies.

Morphology evolution and mechanical property enhancement of linear low-density polyethylene by adding disentangled ultrahigh molecular weight polyethylene

Yu Zhang et al.

Summary: The research found that miscible blends of UHMWPE and LLDPE can be obtained with a small addition amount of UHMWPE, and the mechanical properties of the blends are improved through the co-crystallization of UHMWPE, leading to significant increases in impact strength, breaking elongation, Young's modulus, and tensile strength when the addition amount of UHMWPE is 5.0 wt%.

Novel, injection molded all-polyethylene composites for potential biomedical implant applications

Laszlo Meszaros et al.

Summary: This study aimed to develop a self-reinforced composite material that can be processed using standard thermoplastic techniques and has potential applications in implants. By cross-linking fibers with gamma irradiation and combining high-density polyethylene with high-performance polyethylene fibers, the mechanical performance of the composite material was improved without compromising biocompatibility. The addition of 20 m% 200 kGy irradiated Dyneema (R) fibers significantly increased the tensile modulus and strength of the composite material, which exhibited good biocompatibility. The manufacturing method presented in this study offers an economical solution that can be implemented using widely available processing technologies and machines.

Interfacial localization of organoclay enhances the peelability of polyethylene/polybutene-1/organoclay nanocomposite films

Raziyeh S. Mohammadi et al.

Summary: Premature failure in polymer blends mainly occurs at interfaces between immiscible polymers, but this phenomenon has been exploited to develop a peelable film with a wide peelable seal-temperature window. By adding organoclay and PB-1, the peel strength of the PE/PB-1 blends is improved and the thickness of the PB-1 phase is significantly reduced, leading to enhanced interfacial cracking and consistent peel performance.
