Upper limb involuntary tremor reduction using cantilever beam TMDs

Sarah Gebai et al.

Summary: This study proposes the use of tuned mass dampers (TMDs) to reduce involuntary tremor in the upper limb of patients with postural tremor. A numerical methodology is introduced to optimize the parameters of the TMDs based on both frequency and time domain responses. The TMDs are designed to minimize the maximum angular displacement of the wrist joint. The study conducts a parametric analysis to evaluate the effect of TMD position, number, and total mass, and manufactures stainless steel TMDs to meet the desired frequency. Three TMDs with optimized parameters achieve an 89% reduction in wrist joint angular displacement.

Effect of Deep Brain Stimulation on Cerebellar Tremor Compared to Non-Cerebellar Tremor Using a Wearable Device in a Patient With Multiple Sclerosis: Case Report

Tao Xie et al.

Summary: This study compared the effects of DBS on cerebellar tremor and non-cerebellar tremor in MS patients, finding that cerebellar tremor surprisingly had a similar response to DBS as non-cerebellar tremor. However, the functional control of cerebellar tremor was poorer due to increasing oscillations as it approached the target.

Wearable sensors during drawing tasks to measure the severity of essential tremor

Sheik Mohammed Ali et al.

Summary: This study proposes the use of wearable accelerometer sensors for the quantitative assessment of essential tremor (ET). The results show that the sensor located on the forearm had the best classification and regression results, with moderate to good correlation between Fahn-Tolosa-Marin (FTM) scores and a combination of power spectral density ratio and task time. However, the system could not accurately differentiate ET phenotypes according to the Consensus classification scheme.

Identification and Classification of Parkinsonian and Essential Tremors for Diagnosis Using Machine Learning Algorithms

Xupo Xing et al.

Summary: This study evaluated seven predictive models using machine learning algorithms to differentiate between Parkinson's disease and essential tremor. The results showed that random forest and extreme gradient boosting models had the best predictive ability. The analysis also revealed that the dominant frequency and average amplitude of surface electromyogram signals from flexors, as well as resting and winging postures, had the greatest impact on the diagnosis of Parkinson's disease.

Tremor-Suppression Orthoses for the Upper Limb: Current Developments and Future Challenges

Hoai Son Nguyen et al.

Summary: Pathological tremor is the most common motor disorder in adults, and wearable orthoses with Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) and biomechanical loading have been found to be effective in tremor suppression. Active orthoses are the most prevalent, with bench testing showing the highest efficacy. The majority of orthoses use biomechanical sensors for measuring voluntary and/or tremorous motions.

Summary: Tremors are a common movement disorder that greatly impacts patients' quality of life. While pharmacotherapies are suboptimal in managing tremor, surgical interventions like deep brain stimulation offer durable control but are limited by costs and perceived risks. Medical devices can bridge the gap between lifestyle interventions, pharmacotherapies, and surgical treatments to provide safe and effective tremor suppression.
