Environmental correlates of tree functional diversity with different leaf habits across subtropical evergreen broadleaved forests

Divergent leaf nutrient-use strategies of coexistent evergreen and deciduous trees in a subtropical forest

Summary: Evergreen and deciduous species in subtropical forests in southeastern China adopt different carbon capture strategies to deal with the limitation of phosphorus (P) as the main limiting nutrient. The photosynthetic N-use efficiency (PNUE), respiration rate per unit N and P (R-d,R-N and R-d,R-P) of deciduous species are higher than those of evergreen species, indicating that evergreen species have higher carbon-use efficiency (CUE). Nitrogen resorption efficiency, phosphorus resorption efficiency, and N:P ratios do not differ significantly between deciduous and evergreen species. These findings shed light on the community dynamics modeling in subtropical forests and have implications for future climate change.
