The role of Exosomal miRNAs in cancer

Chuanyun Li et al.

Summary: Exosomal miRNAs play a critical role in regulating genes and their altered expression is associated with almost all human cancers. They modulate processes that interfere with cancer immunity and microenvironment, and significantly impact tumor growth, invasion, metastasis, angiogenesis, and drug resistance. Understanding the detailed mechanisms of miRNAs in cancer development could contribute to both cancer treatment and prevention of malignant diseases. This review highlights recent advances in cancer-derived exosomal miRNAs, including their sorting and delivery mechanisms, as well as their potential as diagnostic and prognostic markers and in detecting cancer resistance to therapeutic agents.

Exosomes as novel biomarkers in metabolic disease and obesity-related cancers

Naser Jafari et al.

Summary: Exosomes are plasma-transported vesicles secreted by human tissues that reflect metabolic status. The profile of exosomes, particularly the microRNA content, is altered in metabolic diseases. In type 2 diabetes mellitus, circulating exosomes in plasma can induce transcriptional changes related to tumor progression and pro-metastatic phenotypes in target cancer cells, potentially linking obesity to cancer progression and metastasis.

Potential Roles of Adipocyte Extracellular Vesicle-Derived miRNAs in Obesity-Mediated Insulin Resistance

Yujeong Kim et al.

Summary: Recent research has shown that extracellular microRNAs from adipose tissue are involved in the development of insulin resistance. Certain miRNAs, such as miR-27a, miR-34a, miR-141-3p, miR-155, miR210, and miR-222, secreted from adipose tissue can impact the insulin signaling pathway in metabolic tissue, contributing to conditions like obesity and type 2 diabetes. Understanding the roles of these miRNAs may offer potential for developing therapeutics for obesity and metabolic disorders.

Adipose Tissue-Derived Extracellular Vesicles and the Tumor Microenvironment: Revisiting the Hallmarks of Cancer

Summary: Increased body fat is associated with a higher risk of various types of cancer, with recent findings suggesting a close relationship between extracellular vesicles released by adipose tissue and the progression of cancer. The alterations in content of adipose tissue-derived extracellular vesicles in obesity, including an increase in pro-inflammatory proteins and oncogenic microRNAs, drive inflammatory responses both locally and systemically. The role of adipose tissue in cancer development is being increasingly recognized, particularly in its communication with cancer cells through extracellular vesicles.
