Characterization of Early Peripheral Immune Responses in Patients with Sepsis and Septic Shock

Jesus Beltran-Garcia et al.

Summary: Sepsis is a life-threatening condition characterized by a malfunction of the immune system. This study aims to analyze the immune response in early stages of sepsis. The results show that the innate immune system attempts to counteract infection in the early stages of sepsis, while the adaptive immune system is not fully activated. Additionally, immunosuppressive responses and pro-coagulation signals are active in patients with septic shock.

Assembly of alternative prothrombinase by extracellular histones initiates and disseminates intravascular coagulation

Simon T. Abrams et al.

Summary: Thrombin generation is crucial in both physiological blood clot formation and DIC development, and histones can induce an alternative prothrombinase pathway without phospholipid anchorage. This study reveals a novel molecular mechanism in thrombin generation and DIC pathogenesis, with potential therapeutic implications for systemic coagulation activation and coagulation factor deficiency.

Circulating Histones in Sepsis: Potential Outcome Predictors and Therapeutic Targets

Yupei Li et al.

Summary: Sepsis is a life-threatening condition caused by dysregulated host response to infection, with circulating histones playing a crucial role in inflammation amplification, organ injury, and coagulation activation. Elevated levels of circulating histones are closely correlated with disease severity and mortality in sepsis patients. Current anti-histone therapies offer promising approaches for sepsis treatment.

Summary: Sepsis is a life-threatening organ dysfunction caused by dysregulated host systemic inflammatory and immune response to infection. Advanced understanding of host-microorganism interaction has led to new definitions and therapeutic approaches. Research focus has shifted from pathogenicity of microorganisms to the molecular basis of host responses.
