Investigation into self-assembled collagen arrays guided by the surface properties of polyimide films

Yadong Chai et al.

Summary: The mechanism of highly-oriented collagen fibril arrays on rubbed polyimide films has been investigated, revealing the interfacial Col-PI interactions. It was found that the orientation of surface functional groups on the rubbed PI films can be effectively controlled by the rubbing conditions. Nano-grooves with certain dimensions were formed on the surfaces of the films, leading to the highest density of collagen fibril arrays. The orientation and density of the fibril arrays were controlled by the interfacial interactions between the beta-Sheet component of Col and the nano-groove surfaces of the rubbed PI films. This novel technology provides an effective method to fabricate one-directional fibrous nanostructures and control the orientation of biomolecules in vitro.
