Cutting force, Vibration, and Temperature in Drilling on a Thermoplastic Material of PEEK

Dar-Yuan Chang et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the machining characteristics of Polyetheretherketone (PEEK) drilling using multiple sensors. The results showed that the feed rate has a greater effect on thrust force compared to spindle speed. Low-level spindle speed and feed rate can minimize cutting force and acceleration amplitude. In addition, the temperature within the drilling area is inversely related to the feed rate, and a high-level feed rate promotes the formation of regular curl chips.

In-situ temperature monitoring during rotary ultrasonic-assisted drilling of fiber-reinforced composites

Abhinav Shard et al.

Summary: This study proposes a rotary ultrasonic-assisted drilling technique using diamond-impregnated tools to reduce thermal damage in composite materials. The influence of drilling parameters on temperature elevations was monitored, and the results showed that rotational speed and abrasive grit size have the highest impact. Increasing ultrasonic power during drilling can minimize temperature elevations.

Analysis of tribological behavior of medical-grade UHMW polyethylene under dry and lubricated conditions with human body fluids using Taguchi and GRA techniques

Omar Hussain et al.

Summary: This study focused on evaluating the tribological behavior of UHMWPE with different counterface materials under dry and lubricated sliding conditions. The results showed that UHMWPE performed better under synovial fluid lubrication conditions. Optimization techniques were used to determine the optimal conditions, and it was found that Ti6Al4V counterface material with a normal load of 52 N exhibited the best tribological performance with UHWMPE. The analysis of variance revealed that load was the most significant parameter affecting the coefficient-of-friction (COF) and specific wear rate (WR).

On material selection for topology optimized compliant mechanisms

Johannes Achleitner et al.

Summary: This paper fills the gap in the literature regarding selection of optimal materials for compliant mechanism design by using density-based, geometrically robust, stress constrained topology optimization methods. Large-scale optimization studies are conducted to identify the best suited material characteristics, while exploring the influence of critical optimization parameters on material choice. Guidelines for efficient selection of materials for compliant mechanism designers are developed based on the research findings.

S. Thirumalvalavan et al.

Summary: This study investigates the impact of high-velocity oxygen fuel (HVOF) process variables on the wear and mechanical properties of SiC coating on Ti-6Al-4V alloy. Optimization using grey relational analysis and principal component analysis reveals that the optimal parameters for reducing wear rate are a spraying distance of 228 mm, oxygen flow rate of 34 lpm, powder feeding rate of 90 g/min, and carrier gas flow rate of 60 lpm.

Measurement uncertainty analysis of a measurement flexure hinge in a torque standard machine

Kai Geva et al.

Summary: This paper presents an alternative method using a hinge flexure to measure FT and TM under a static multi-component load. The method is applied to the 5 MN m torque standard machine at PTB to detect calibration torque moment shunts. The measurement principle involves displacement measurement by an interferometer and determination of the flexure stiffness in a special CSU. The paper discusses and quantifies essential measurement uncertainty influences and presents the measurement uncertainty budget for this method.

Prediction of Fatigue Life for a New 2-DOF Compliant Mechanism by Clustering-Based ANFIS Approach

Ngoc Thoai Tran et al.

Summary: Fatigue life prediction of 2-DOF compliant mechanism is studied for the first time in this article using a method that combines differential evolution algorithm and adaptive neuro-fuzzy inference system with subtractive clustering. The proposed method shows high accuracy in two case studies with steel A-36 and AL 6061-T6 materials. The statistical test demonstrates that the proposed method outperforms traditional methods in fatigue life prediction for 2-DOF compliant mechanism.

Synthesis of compliant mechanisms with selective compliance - An advanced procedure

Stephanie Kirmse et al.

Summary: By utilizing compliant mechanisms, controlled deformations can be achieved, but mechanisms with distributed compliance may deviate from desired behavior. Selective compliant mechanisms are advanced structures that can approximate ideal behavior. A new synthesis approach, which incrementally linearizes the optimization problem, is presented for the stable synthesis of mechanisms with multiple output degrees of freedom.

Mechanical stress and deformation in the rotors of a high-speed PMSM and IM

Martin Enno Gerlach et al.

Summary: This study focuses on analyzing the mechanical stress and deformation of high-speed electric machine rotors, and verifying the results through finite element simulation and spin tests. The findings show that both designs do not exceed the maximum mechanical stress for the defined operating range. The IM rotor exhibits plastic and elastic deformation, while the PMSM rotor shows more plastic deformation.
