The impact of a rub and rinse regimen on removal of human coronaviruses from contemporary contact lens materials

Christiane Lourenco Nogueira et al.

Summary: This study found that contemporary contact lens materials can be easily contaminated by human coronaviruses. However, virus contamination can be effectively removed from these materials using a simple saline rinse step. It is crucial to include a rub and rinse step when using contact lens care products based on non-oxidative systems to completely eliminate virus contamination.

Antiviral Activity of Contemporary Contact Lens Care Solutions against Two Human Seasonal Coronavirus Strains

Christiane Lourenco Nogueira et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of different contact lens care products on the infectiousness of two seasonal human coronaviruses. The results showed that oxidative disinfection systems exhibited significant virucidal activity, while non-oxidative systems showed minimal ability to inactivate the viruses.

Antibacterial Efficacy of Cold-Sprayed Copper Coatings against Gram-Positive Staphylococcus aureus and Gram-Negative Escherichia coli

Novana Hutasoit et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that coating copper on high-touch components can effectively inhibit bacterial growth, with the antibacterial effect closely related to coating thickness, hardness, and other properties. By adjusting the characteristics of copper coatings, they can be made more effective against targeted bacteria.

Robust Evaluation of Ultraviolet-C Sensitivity for SARS-CoV-2 and Surrogate Coronaviruses

S. J. Boegel et al.

Summary: UV-C light at 254 nm is an effective means of disinfecting coronaviruses, including SARS-CoV-2. The study demonstrated that SARS-CoV-2, along with other coronaviruses, are easily inactivated by 254 nm irradiation, with similar UV sensitivities, making surrogate viruses useful for simplifying disinfection studies. Accurate measurement of light intensity, consideration of fluid UV absorbance, and confirmation of uniform dose delivery were essential in determining the UV sensitivity of these viruses.

Assessment of Antiviral Coatings for High-Touch Surfaces by Using Human Coronaviruses HCoV-229E and SARS-CoV-2

S. Butot et al.

Summary: A novel approach was developed to evaluate the antiviral activity of coatings, testing three commercially available products against human coronaviruses. Results showed that a copper compound-based coating performed best, while coatings based on other compounds did not meet efficacy criteria. These findings provide valuable insights for future development of antiviral coatings.

Virus matrix interference on assessment of virucidal activity of high-touch surfaces designed to prevent hospital-acquired infections

Sadru-Dean Walji et al.

Summary: The study showed that a copper-nickel-zinc alloy has strong virucidal effects for enveloped viruses, with copper, nickel, and zinc ions leaching from the alloy surface. However, virucidal activity was lost under high soiling conditions. The results suggest that ion leaching is associated with virucidal activity in both wet and dried virus conditions.

Thermal Spray Copper Alloy Coatings as Potent Biocidal and Virucidal Surfaces

J. Mostaghimi et al.

Summary: This review explores the use of thermal spray technology to coat surfaces in healthcare and public settings for inhibiting pathogen transmission. Emphasis is placed on the influence of coating structure, porosity, and roughness on biocidal activity, and the implications of using this knowledge to optimize copper coatings for irreversibly inactivating viral pathogens. Additionally, the long-term performance of copper alloy coatings in real hospital settings in Canada and Peru is discussed.
