Holographic Waveguide Display With Large Field of View and High Light Efficiency Based on Polarized Volume Holographic Grating

Yuchen Gu et al.

Summary: A polarization multiplexing structure based on multilayer reflective polarized volume holographic gratings (PVGs) is proposed to enhance the field of view and brightness of augmented reality waveguide displays. Through stacking PVGs with different periodic components, the structure increases wavelength and angular bandwidth. Control of liquid crystal pitch rotation direction allows for diffraction of both left-hand and right-hand circularly polarized light, significantly improving efficiency.

Advanced liquid crystal devices for augmented reality and virtual reality displays: principles and applications

Kun Yin et al.

Summary: Liquid crystal displays (LCDs) and photonic devices are crucial for augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR). The emerging HDR mini-LED backlit LCDs improve image quality and brightness while reducing power consumption for VR displays. High-resolution-density and high-brightness liquid-crystal-on-silicon (LCoS) show promise as image sources for see-through AR displays, especially in high ambient lighting conditions.

Twisting Structures in Liquid Crystal Polarization Gratings and Lenses

Shiyuan Zhang et al.

Summary: Recent research has shown that diverse twisting structures can be used to design liquid crystal polarization gratings and lenses with high diffraction efficiency, broad bandwidth, wide view, and large diffraction angle. By phase compensation, multi-layer twisting structures have been found to present a broader bandwidth and wider view angle, while Bragg twisting structures can achieve a large diffraction angle with high efficiency. Potential research directions on novel twisting structures were discussed based on theoretical analysis in the review.
