Fermentation optimization, purification and biochemical characterization of iota-carrageenase from marine bacterium Cellulophaga baltica

Shareef Muzyed et al.

Summary: A marine bacterium, Cellulophaga baltica, isolated from the surface of a filamentous red alga Vertebrata fucoides, was found to degrade iota-carrageenan. By optimizing fermentation conditions, the specific activity of the enzyme was significantly increased.

Overview on Microbial Enzymatic Production of Algal Oligosaccharides for Nutraceutical Applications

Ashok S. Jagtap et al.

Summary: There is a growing global demand for algal foods due to their nutritional and health benefits. Macroalgae are rich sources of metabolites, proteins, pigments, bioactive compounds, and algal polysaccharides. Enzymatically produced algal oligosaccharides have gained attention for their green synthesis, solubility, and smaller molecular size, with reported bioactivities including antioxidant, antiglycemic, immunostimulatory, anti-inflammatory, and prebiotic activities. Identifying potential microorganisms producing polysaccharide-hydrolyzing enzymes remains a challenge for efficient utilization of bioactive algal oligosaccharides.
