Plasticized hydroxypropyl cassava starch blended PBAT for improved clarity blown films: Morphology and properties

Kiattichai Wadaugsorn et al.

Summary: Blending of plasticized hydroxypropyl cassava thermoplastic starch (TPS) with polybutylene adipate terephthalate (PBAT) via blown-film extrusion was studied. Higher DS values were found to increase film clarity and glossy surface, reduce crystallinity, improve hydrophilicity, mechanical properties and compatibility between PBAT and TPS. Modified DS in hydroxypropyl starch efficiently improved clarity, mechanical and barrier properties of bioplastic packaging.

Material properties and antimicrobial activities of starch/PBAT composite films incorporated with e-polylysine hydrochloride prepared by extrusion blowing

Shan Gao et al.

Summary: In this study, starch/PBAT antimicrobial films with different e-polylysine hydrochloride (e-PL) contents were developed and their properties were investigated. The results showed that the incorporation of e-PL significantly affected the rheological properties, thermal stability, and antimicrobial activity of the films, but decreased the mechanical properties and moisture barrier.

Polyurethane prepolymer-modified high-content starch-PBAT films

Chenhao Zhang et al.

Summary: By modifying polyurethane prepolymer and introducing different contents of amylose, a modified starch-poly(butylene adipate co-terephthalate) film with high amylose content and excellent performance was successfully prepared. The crystallinity, hydrophobicity, oxygen-barrier properties, and mechanical properties of the film increased with the increasing amylose content, indicating its potential use in biodegradable applications such as packaging materials, agricultural films, and garbage bags.

Optimizing interfacial adhesion in PBAT/PLA nanocomposite for biodegradable packaging films

Shuo Qiu et al.

Summary: The biodegradable films made of PBAT and PLA, incorporating POSS(epoxy)8 as a reactive compatibilizer, showed improved interfacial adhesion, mechanical properties, and gas permeability. The addition of POSS(epoxy)8 during film production can offer a simple strategy for producing high-performance biodegradable plastic packaging films.

High content corn starch/Poly (butylene adipate-co-terephthalate) composites with high-performance by physical-chemical dual compatibilization

Chengqiang Li et al.

Summary: The study focused on preparing corn starch/PBAT composites with high starch content and high mechanical strength using MDI as a crosslinker and PUP as a modifier and compatibilizer. The results revealed that increasing MDI content enhanced the water resistance, thermal stability, sealing performance, and mechanical properties of the composites, demonstrating strong interfacial compatibility.

Reactive extrusion-processed native and phosphated starch-based food packaging films governed by the hierarchical structure

Tomy J. Gutierrez et al.

Summary: The aim of this research was to investigate novel tools provided by nanotechnology and green chemistry to address the drawbacks of starch-based films. However, the materials developed did not show improved performance compared to the control film. The hierarchical structure and modification of starch were crucial for the formation of self-assembled thermoplastic starches.

Effect of plasticizers on physical, thermal, and tensile properties of thermoplastic films based on Dioscorea hispida starch

K. Z. Hazrati et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of varying concentrations of sorbitol and glycerol on the properties of Dioscorea hispida starch-based films. The results showed that increasing plasticizer concentrations led to higher moisture contents, lower tensile strengths, and higher elongations at break. The thermal properties were minimally affected by the plasticizer concentrations, but significant decrease in glass transition temperatures was observed.
