Sensitivity Analysis via the Proportion of Unmeasured Confounding

Matteo Bonvini et al.

Summary: This article introduces a novel sensitivity analysis approach, with the sensitivity parameter set as the proportion of unmeasured confounding, to investigate the impact of unmeasured confounders on research outcomes. By making different probability assumptions, sharp boundaries on the average treatment effect are derived, and nonparametric estimators are proposed for flexible covariate adjustment. Additionally, a one-number summary is introduced to assess the robustness of the study to the number of confounded units.

Off-Policy Confidence Interval Estimation with Confounded Markov Decision Process

Chengchun Shi et al.

Summary: This article focuses on constructing a confidence interval to predict the value of a target policy offline in infinite horizon settings, based on pre-collected observational data. Most existing works assume that there are no unmeasured variables that would confound observed actions, but this article demonstrates that by using auxiliary variables to mediate the effect of actions on system dynamics, the value of the target policy can be identified even in a confounded Markov decision process. A robust off policy value estimator is developed based on this result, which can handle potential model misspecification and provide rigorous uncertainty quantification.

Selecting and Ranking Individualized Treatment Rules With Unmeasured Confounding

Bo Zhang et al.

Summary: This article discusses the comparison of individualized treatment rules based on the value function and explores decision-making in the presence of unmeasured confounding factors. By comparing two treatment rules in a single-decision environment and utilizing this test to rank multiple treatment rules, the study aims to select the best rules among many options.

Estimating optimal treatment rules with an instrumental variable: A partial identification learning approach

Hongming Pu et al.

Summary: This work proposes a general framework for approaching the optimal ITR estimation problem with only partially identifying the treatment effect with a valid IV. It introduces the concept of 'IV-optimality' to minimize maximum risk and derives a bound on the risk of an IV-optimal rule. The method is compared to the popular outcome weighted learning approach through simulations and applied to study the benefits of delivering premature babies at hospitals with high-level neonatal intensive care units.

POLICY LEARNING WITH OBSERVATIONAL DATA

Susan Athey et al.

Summary: The study proposes a new method for learning treatment assignment policies that satisfy application-specific constraints, optimizing binary or continuous treatments and utilizing observational data to identify causal effects. The method provides strong guarantees for the asymptotic utilitarian regret of the resulting policy.
