Topological superconductivity and Majorana states in low-dimensional systems

V. V. Val'kov et al.

Summary: We discuss the properties and conditions for the realization of topologically nontrivial superconducting phases in condensed matter. We also explore the criteria and experimental methods for identifying Majorana bound states (MBSs) and discuss various models where MBSs are realized. The transport characteristics of devices containing topologically nontrivial materials are analyzed, and the conductance of an Aharonov-Bohm ring connected by a superconducting nanowire (SW) is studied in detail. We also investigate the occurrence of MBSs in the coexistence phase of chiral d + id superconductivity and 120-degree spin ordering.

Manifestation of Majorana modes overlap in the Aharonov-Bohm effect

S. Aksenov

Summary: One of the key features of Majorana bound states is the increasing oscillations of their energy with the growth of magnetic field or chemical potential. This study found that this feature leads to a shift of Aharonov-Bohm oscillations and a doubling of the oscillation period in an interference device. Numerical and analytical calculations support the results and show that the AB oscillations acquire a fundamental pi/2 shift due to the coupling between different arms and normal contact.

Non-Abelian statistics of Majorana zero modes in the presence of an Andreev bound state

Wenqin Chen et al.

Summary: This study investigates the braiding of Majorana zero modes (MZMs) in a parallel semiconductor-superconductor nanowire structure. It is found that in the presence of Andreev bound states (ABSs), this braiding operation can be seen as a pair of weakly coupled MZMs. By manipulating rotations on the Bloch sphere, arbitrary rotations of a single qubit can be achieved.

Non-Majorana states yield nearly quantized conductance in proximatized nanowires

P. Yu et al.

Summary: This study reports the observation of nearly quantized peaks close to the expected value by tunnel probes on both ends of a nanowire. However, the nearly quantized zero-bias peaks were only found localized to one end of the nanowire, raising doubts on whether they are Majoranas.

Nontopological zero-bias peaks in full-shell nanowires induced by flux-tunable Andreev states

Marco Valentini et al.

Summary: The presence of subgap states in a semiconducting nanowire fully wrapped by a superconducting shell is influenced by the junction region in tunneling spectroscopy measurements, rather than the nanowire itself. Quantum dots formed in the junction region may host Andreev levels in the Yu-Shiba-Rusinov regime, leading to intricate magnetic field dependence of the Andreev levels. This could result in zero-bias peaks that are easily misinterpreted as originating from Majorana zero modes, but are actually unrelated to topological superconductivity.

Topological Kondo device for distinguishing quasi-Majorana and Majorana signatures

Donghao Liu et al.

Summary: Efforts have been made to distinguish between Majorana zero modes (MZMs) and spatially separated quasi-Majorana modes (QMMs), both of which cause a quantized zero-bias peak in conductance measurement. A simple device utilizing a single nanowire was proposed to provide evidence of the topological Kondo effect in the topologically trivial phase with four QMMs, making it easier to distinguish Majorana and quasi-Majorana modes. Transport signatures are significantly different between the topological superconducting phase with MZMs and the topologically trivial phase with QMMs.

Confinement-induced zero-bias peaks in conventional superconductor hybrids

Jorge Cayao et al.

Summary: Quasi-zero-energy states can form naturally in any superconducting hybrid junction due to confinement effects, independent of spin fields and topology. These topologically trivial quasi-zero-energy states produce zero-bias conductance peaks similar to Majorana signatures, but with different peak height and stability characteristics.

Topological isoconductance signatures in Majorana nanowires

L. S. Ricco et al.

Summary: The study shows that when highly nonlocal and nonoverlapping Majorana bound states are formed in the system, the conductance through the quantum dot exhibits characteristic isoconductance profiles, with the shape depending on the spin asymmetry of the coupling. On the other hand, when there is less nonlocality and more overlap in the Majorana bound states, the conductance becomes insensitive to spin polarization and the isoconductance signatures disappear.

Distinguishing trivial and topological zero-energy states in long nanowire junctions

Jorge Cayao et al.

Summary: This study explores the emergence of robust but trivial zero-energy states in non-topological superconductors, proposing a simple protocol for distinguishing between trivial and topological zero-energy states. The response of equilibrium supercurrents and critical currents to variations in superconductor region length is found to be different when trivial zero-energy states are present, compared to when topological Majorana bound states are present.

Transmission amplitude through a Coulomb blockaded Majorana wire

Matthias Thamm et al.

Summary: Coherent electronic transport through a Coulomb blockaded superconducting Rashba wire in the cotunneling regime was studied. By varying an external Zeeman field, the wire can be tuned into a topological regime where nonlocal transport through Majorana zero modes is dominant. The transmission amplitude has a maximum as a function of Zeeman field, proportional to the wire length, serving as unique signatures for the presence of Majorana zero modes.

Three-terminal nonlocal conductance in Majorana nanowires: Distinguishing topological and trivial in realistic systems with disorder and inhomogeneous potential

Haining Pan et al.

Summary: In this study, we develop a theory for the three-terminal nonlocal conductance in Majorana nanowires in superconductor-semiconductor hybrid structures. We investigate whether nonlocal conductance can distinguish between trivial and topological Majorana scenarios in the presence of chemical potential inhomogeneity and random impurity disorder. The results show that the combination of local, nonlocal electrical, and thermal conductance measurements is necessary to accurately demonstrate topological Majorana zero modes in nanowires, as individual measurements may be influenced by disorder and heterogeneous potential.
