Microbial molecule ingress promotes neuroinflammation and brain CCR5 expression in persons with HIV-associated neurocognitive disorders

William G. Branton et al.

Summary: This study investigated the interactions between lentivirus infections, neuroinflammation, and microbial molecules in the brain. The findings showed that levels of microbial genomes and proteins were increased in brain tissues from lentivirus-infected humans and animals, and were associated with neurological disease.

HIV-1 gp120 and tobacco smoke synergistically disrupt the integrity of the blood-brain barrier

Aditya Bhalerao et al.

Summary: People living with HIV/AIDS have a heightened risk of neurological disorders, and chronic smoking can worsen the damage to the cerebrovascular system. Co-treatment with tobacco smoke extract and HIV-1 gp120 can increase cellular stress responses in brain microvascular endothelial cells, potentially worsening the loss of blood-brain barrier viability.

Characterization of Macrophage-Tropic HIV-1 Infection of Central Nervous System Cells and the Influence of Inflammation

Blaide M. Woodburn et al.

Summary: The major feature of HIV-1 pathogenesis is the induction of an immunodeficient state in the face of an enhanced state of inflammation. HIV-1 infection in the central nervous system (CNS) can lead to a wide range of neurocognitive defects. This study focuses on the susceptibility of different CNS cell types to HIV-1 infection and the impact of inflammation on viral infectivity. The findings suggest that myeloid cells are the only cells in the CNS that can be infected, while astrocytes and neurons are not susceptible. The study also reveals the negative impact of an inflammatory state on viral infection in all cell types.

Important role of microglia in HIV-1 associated neurocognitive disorders and the molecular pathways implicated in its pathogenesis

A. Borrajo et al.

Summary: The development of effective cART has reduced the death rate associated with HIV-1 infection, but over 50% of patients develop HAND. Microglia, as the primary cells infected by HIV-1 in CNS, contribute to neurotoxicity observed in HAND through inflammation and oxidative stress mechanisms. Understanding the activation of microglia and pathways involved in neuroinflammation is crucial for potential therapeutic targets in HAND treatment.

Differential effects of integrase strand transfer inhibitors, elvitegravir and raltegravir, on oligodendrocyte maturation: A role for the integrated stress response

Lindsay M. Roth et al.

Summary: This study found that elvitegravir affects oligodendrocyte differentiation and remyelination, and the integrated stress response plays a role in mediating this effect, potentially serving as a therapeutic target.

KEGG: integrating viruses and cellular organisms

Minoru Kanehisa et al.

Summary: KEGG is a curated resource integrating eighteen databases categorized into systems, genomic, chemical and health information, providing mapping tools for understanding cellular and organism-level functions from genome sequences and other molecular datasets. The network variation maps in the KEGG database show how different pathogens and environmental factors influence cellular signaling pathways.
