Precis of gap test results requiring reappraisal of line crack and phase-field models of fracture mechanics

Summary: This paper provides a brief review of recent advances in fracture mechanics at Northwestern University and Istanbul Technical University, focusing on the discovery of the gap test. The study reveals the effects of crack-parallel stresses on mode-I fracture energy and nominal strength, which cannot be captured by standard fracture models. A new fracture model reflecting tensorial damage behavior in the fracture process zone is necessary for accurate analysis of fracture mechanics.

Summary: The study aims to formulate an analytical scaling law for the size effect transition from elastic-plastic behavior through small- and large-scale yielding to fracture process zone, which would be useful for the design and measurement of mode-I ductile fracture properties of metals. The modeling of plastic-hardening materials is complicated by the presence of a millimeter-scale singular yielding zone between the micrometer-scale fracture process zone and the elastic material, affecting the large-scale transitional size effect.
