Thermal effects on interaction of solute atmosphere with a spherical void in three-dimensional elastic solid: Statistical mechanics description with Monte Carlo simulation

Qinghua Song et al.

Summary: The distribution of solute atoms around defects in a solid is studied in this work, focusing on the interaction of solute atmosphere with a spherical void in a spherical elastic solid. The study shows the rationality of modeling solute atoms as point dilatations and explores the effects of initial solute distribution and temperature on the solute atom distribution using the Monte Carlo method. The results reveal a metastable equilibrium state influenced by low temperature and initial solute distribution, with the enthalpy showing three stages of variations with temperature and two transition temperatures identified.

A statistical mechanics-based investigation of a solute atmosphere interacting with a crack: Solute redistribution and image effects

H. Haftbaradaran et al.

Summary: In this study, the interaction between a solute atmosphere and a crack under external loading is examined within the framework of statistical mechanics, considering image stresses and using Monte Carlo simulations. Results show that solute redistribution induced by tensile loading increases the energy release rate (ERR) of crack growth, and even at high temperatures where solute distribution is nearly uniform, the interaction between the collective image stress field of the solutes and loading stress field contributes to the ERR, strengthening with solute concentration and external loading.
