A model of void coalescence in columns

M. E. Torki et al.

Summary: Void coalescence in columns (or necklace coalescence) is a mechanism of void link-up in metal alloys and polymers, which has been confirmed through computation and physical observation but received little attention in literature. This study analyzed the phenomenon using limit analysis and homogenization theories, considering a cylindrical unit cell with a finite height cylindrical void under axially symmetric loading. The predictions were compared with other yielding modes and assessed against finite element-based limit analysis.

Void growth yield criteria for intergranular ductile fracture

C. Senac et al.

Summary: Ductile fracture caused by the growth and merging of intergranular cavities is a common failure mode in metallic alloys used in industrial applications. Existing yield criteria for porous materials fail to consider the complex coupling between loading state, crystallographic orientations, void shape, and material behavior at grain boundaries. In order to bridge this gap, two yield criteria for intergranular ductile void growth are proposed and validated using numerical simulations. These criteria allow for microstructure-informed intergranular ductile fracture simulation and study the interplay between plastic yielding inside grains and along grain boundaries.

Ductile Fracture in Plane Stress

Mohammad Torki et al.

Summary: A micromechanics-based ductile fracture initiation theory has been developed and applied for high-throughput assessment of ductile failure in plane stress. The theory describes microscopic failure occurring in bands with inhomogeneous yielding, where the driving force is a combination of band-resolved normal and shear tractions. The new criterion is similar to the Mohr-Coulomb model but includes sensitivity to the third stress invariant, resulting in a finite shear ductility that cannot be explained by isotropic theory alone.

Effect of Delamination on Ductile Fracture during the Impact Test in Ultra-Heavy Steel

Hongtao Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of delamination on ductile fracture by studying two industrial ship plate steels, one with delamination and the other without, during impact tests at low temperatures. The results show that delamination occurs before the main fracture surface, dividing the stress concentration and avoiding severe stress concentration and grain breakage. Additionally, delamination helps eliminate the formation of a radial zone with a plane strain state while maintaining ductile fracture.

Homogenized constitutive equations for porous single crystals plasticity

C. Senac et al.

Summary: Ductile fracture through void growth to coalescence occurs at the grain scale in metallic alloys. Classical models for simulating ductile fracture are relevant for large voids compared to the grain size. This study proposes homogenized constitutive equations for porous single crystals plasticity and evaluates the accuracy of the model using an extended database of simulation results.

Exploration of subsequent yield surfaces through unit cell simulations

Mayank Chouksey et al.

Summary: The subsequent yield surfaces of ductile solids pre-strained in shear and/or tension exhibit various characteristic features depending on the proof strain used for detection. These features include kinematic hardening, isotropic hardening, and distinct shapes such as a 'nose' and flattened rear part of the yield surface. The accumulation of plasticity within the unit cell plays a crucial role in determining these features, with computational simulations able to replicate experimentally observed behaviors more comprehensively than traditional experiments. Additionally, the evolution of the yield surface is influenced by levels of triaxiality induced by the pre-straining process, with regions of higher triaxiality showing significantly different behaviors.

An analysis of Lode effects in ductile failure

M. E. Torki et al.

Summary: This study investigates the effects of the third stress invariant in ductile failure of porous materials, using an isotropic multi-surface model to analyze the yielding behavior and failure characteristics. It is found that failure typically occurs after the transition to inhomogeneous yielding and strongly depends on the Lode parameter.
