Topology optimization and de-homogenization of graded lattice structures based on asymptotic homogenization

Liang Xu et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel two-step homogenization-based topology optimization and de-homogenization method for the design of graded lattice structures. The advantage of this formulation is two-fold, with relaxed micro design space and excellent agreement between single-scale lattice structures and homogenization results. The proposed method shows versatility for a broad range of lattice patterns.

4D Printing of Origami Structures for Minimally Invasive Surgeries Using Functional Scaffold

Thomas Langford et al.

Summary: This short communication introduces the proof of concept of merging origami and 4D printing technologies to develop minimally invasive delivery of functional biomedical scaffolds with high shape recovery. The results showed that the 4D printed herringbone tessellation origami exhibited a significant 96% recovery rate compared to the PLA filament's 61%, proving the potential of applying 4D printing of origami structures to biomedical scaffolds.

3D-Printed Ti6Al4V Scaffolds with Graded Triply Periodic Minimal Surface Structure for Bone Tissue Engineering

Bo Liao et al.

Summary: This study prepared scaffolds with radial gradient porosities resembling the graded structure of human bone using TPMS scaffolds and SLM technology. The scaffolds exhibited high biocompatibility and biomechanical performance, with microstructure analysis revealing radial decreasing porosity from outer to inner layers, satisfying human bone requirements. Cell viability tests also demonstrated expected biocompatibility of the scaffolds.

A variational approach of homogenization of heterogeneous materials towards second gradient continua

J. F. Ganghoffer et al.

Summary: A methodology is proposed for constructing effective strain gradient media for heterogeneous materials, combining linear elasticity variational principle and extended Hill lemma. The method decomposes the microscopic displacement field of the heterogeneous continuum into a polynomial homogeneous part in the generalized kinematic measures of the strain gradient effective continuum and a periodic fluctuation, and computes strain gradient effective moduli for composite materials.

A Review of 3D Printing in Dentistry: Technologies, Affecting Factors, and Applications

Yueyi Tian et al.

Summary: Three-dimensional (3D) printing technologies, based on computer-aided design digital models, have been widely used in various fields for nearly 30 years, including dentistry. Despite advantages such as high material utilization and manufacturing complex geometries, they also have drawbacks like high cost and time-consuming postprocessing. The future trend of 3D printing in dentistry will likely involve the development of new materials and technologies.
