Dermal fibroblast phagocytosis of apoptotic cells: A novel pathway for wound resolution

Summary: The study shows that fibroblasts can engulf apoptotic endothelial cells (ApoEC) and acquire a pro-healing phenotype in the process. The uptake of ApoEC is partly mediated by the milk fat globule-EGF factor 8 protein/integrin alpha(v)beta(5) pathway, which enhances cell migration, contractility, alpha-smooth muscle actin expression, and collagen deposition in fibroblasts.
