Thickness change and jelly roll deformation and its impact on the aging and lifetime of commercial 18650 cylindrical Li-ion cells with silicon containing anodes and nickel-rich cathodes

Philipp Heugel et al.

Summary: This study investigated the long-term cycling of two types of commercial cylindrical cells with NCA cathodes and anodes containing different silicon materials. The influence of two voltage windows on cell aging was explored. Various analyses revealed volume expansion, thickness change, and electrode coating delamination during cell aging. The findings showed differences in aging behavior based on the type of silicon active material used. The study also identified the loss of lithium from the cathode and anode volume change as the main aging mechanisms. Limiting the voltage range was found to increase cell lifetime and reduce aging effects on silicon.
