Critical Evaluation of Potentiostatic Holds as Accelerated Predictors of Capacity Fade during Calendar Aging

Maxwell C. Schulze et al.

Summary: Li-ion batteries experience capacity and power loss over time due to slow parasitic processes. This study evaluates the use of potentiostatic holds to accelerate the diagnosis of Li+ loss during calendar aging. The findings show that while the method cannot quantitatively forecast aging trends, it can be applied for qualitative screening of stable systems.

Evolution of initial cell-to-cell variations during a three-year production cycle

M. Schindler et al.

Summary: This study investigates the development of cells' capacity, internal resistance, and energy density over a time span of nearly three years for three different batches of the same cell. Significant differences in cell-to-cell variations between the batches were found, suggesting that BEV manufacturers should consider how they can counter the influence of these variations through an operating strategy to protect themselves against regress claims by customers in the long term.

High-Energy Nickel-Cobalt-Aluminium Oxide (NCA) Cells on Idle: Anode- versus Cathode-Driven Side Reactions

Alana Zulke et al.

Summary: The study reveals that different states of charge (SoC) have distinct impacts on the capacity fade of commercial lithium-ion cells, with noticeable differences in degradation rates for SoC values below and above 60%. Additionally, the storage state of the cells at different temperatures also affects the degradation rate.

Lithium ion battery degradation: what you need to know

Jacqueline S. Edge et al.

Summary: The article summarizes the degradation of lithium-ion batteries into three levels: mechanisms, observable consequences, and operational effects. It identifies five principal and thirteen secondary mechanisms leading to five observable modes, and presents a flowchart and table illustrating the feedback loops and experimental conditions for investigating battery degradation.
