Transference Number in Polymer Electrolytes: Mind the Reference-Frame Gap

Yunqi Shao et al.

Summary: This study investigates the transport coefficients, particularly the transference number, of electrolyte solutions and their significance in the design of electrochemical energy storage devices. It is found that the neglect of the reference frame leads to discrepancies between experimental and simulation results, but a proper reference frame transformation can greatly improve the agreement. Furthermore, the study highlights the importance of ion mass and ion-ion correlation in the occurrence of negative transference numbers.

Effect of Solvent Motion on Ion Transport in Electrolytes

Aashutosh Mistry et al.

Summary: The equation describing solvent velocity in a binary electrolyte was derived using concentrated solution theory, and combined with the material balance equation to predict concentration profiles and species velocities. It was found that accounting for solvent motion is crucial, especially in symmetric cells.

Limiting Current Density in Single-Ion-Conducting and Conventional Block Copolymer Electrolytes

Zach J. Hoffman et al.

Summary: In this study, the limiting current density of a conventional polymer electrolyte and a single-ion-conducting polymer electrolyte was measured using a new method. The results indicate that the limiting current density of the conventional electrolyte is inversely proportional to electrolyte thickness, while the limiting current density of the single-ion-conducting electrolyte is independent of thickness.

Electric-Field-Induced Spatially Dynamic Heterogeneity of Solvent Motion and Cation Transference in Electrolytes

David M. Halat et al.

Summary: The study found that electric fields primarily result in migration of charged species in electrolytic solutions, and different solvation motifs and concentrations can affect the cation transference number. At a certain concentration, the dynamic heterogeneity of solvent molecules is minimized and the transference number approaches zero.

The Transference Number

Kevin W. Gao et al.

Summary: This perspective discusses the distinction between approximate and rigorous methods for measuring transference numbers and the importance of considering the reference frame used in the analysis. By comparing values obtained from different sources and discussing the relationship between salt concentration gradients and transference numbers, it helps to better understand the performance of electrochemical systems.

Divergence of Velocity Fields in Electrochemical Systems

Nitash P. Balsara et al.

Summary: This paper discusses the development of concentration gradients in electrochemical systems and their modeling using concentrated solution theory. The main advancement is the derivation of an expression for the divergence of the solvent velocity, which is essential for solving the diffusion equation. The paper also introduces the required parameters for solving this equation.

Current-driven solvent segregation in lithium-ion electrolytes

Andrew A. Wang et al.

Summary: Liquid lithium-battery electrolytes commonly use multiple solvents to balance conductivity and viscosity. Current continuum models that treat cosolvent systems as single entities have been found to be inaccurate. Simulations have shown extreme solvent segregation near electrode/liquid interfaces, providing new insights for electrolyte design.

Modifying Li+ and Anion Diffusivities in Polyacetal Electrolytes: A Pulsed-Field-Gradient NMR Study of Ion Self-Diffusion

David M. Halat et al.

Summary: Polyacetal electrolytes show potential as high-performance polymer electrolytes for rechargeable lithium-ion batteries. Structure-property trends reveal that anion diffusion decreases with increasing methylene oxide content, while all polyacetal electrolytes exhibit faster lithium cation diffusion compared to PEO at a given reduced temperature. Molecular dynamics simulations suggest that acetal oxygen distances promote diverse lithium coordination environments, supporting the viability of polyacetals as efficient electrolytes.

Interfacial Effects on Transport Coefficient Measurements in Li-ion Battery Electrolytes

Helen K. Bergstrom et al.

Summary: Developing Li+-containing electrolytes with improved transport properties requires reliable techniques to understand ion-transport. This study applied a potentiostatic polarization-based approach to measure transport coefficients in liquid electrolytes, revealing challenges in characterizing electrolyte systems where interfacial resistance is significantly larger than ohmic electrolyte resistance. Methods relying on potentiostatic Li metal stripping/plating did not reliably determine liquid electrolyte transport coefficients.

Glyme-Lithium Bis(trifluoromethylsulfonyl)amide Super-concentrated Electrolytes: Salt Addition to Solvate Ionic Liquids Lowers Ionicity but Liberates Lithium Ions

Atsushi Kitada et al.

Summary: The addition of LiTf2N to solvate ionic liquids significantly alters their electrolyte properties, leading to ligand exchange or hopping conduction of Li+ in super-concentrated electrolytes, resulting in a substantial increase in Li+ transference number. This study highlights the impact of segmental motion on the transport properties of glymes in the super-concentrated region.
