A phase field model for hydrogen-assisted fatigue

Alireza Golahmar et al.

Summary: A new theoretical and numerical approach based on phase field has been proposed for predicting hydrogen-assisted fatigue. The role of hydrogen in fatigue crack growth is investigated, and virtual S-N curves for both notched and smooth samples are obtained, showing good agreement with experiments.

An electro-chemo-mechanical framework for predicting hydrogen uptake in metals due to aqueous electrolytes

Tim Hageman et al.

Summary: We propose a theoretical and numerical scheme to quantify the ingress of hydrogen in metals. By resolving the electrochemical behavior of the electrolyte, hydrogen and corrosion reactions, as well as the kinetics of surface adsorption and hydrogen uptake, diffusion, and trapping in mechanically-deforming solids, we are able to generate maps that relate absorbed hydrogen to applied potential, specimen geometry, and fluid velocity.

A phase field electro-chemo-mechanical formulation for predicting void evolution at the Li-electrolyte interface in all-solid-state batteries

Ying Zhao et al.

Summary: A mechanistic theory for predicting void evolution in all-solid-state battery cells is presented. The theory incorporates phase field formulation, viscoplastic description of Li deformation, mass transfer formulation and interaction between the electrode and the solid electrolyte to resolve the coupled electro-chemical mechanical problem. Numerical implementation and case studies show that the model can capture the main experimental observations.

A fully Eulerian hybrid immersed boundary-phase field model for contact line dynamics on complex geometries

Armin Shahmardi et al.

Summary: A fully Eulerian hybrid immersed-boundary/phase-field model is proposed for simulating wetting and contact line motion over any arbitrary geometry. The algorithm is capable of accurately handling three-phase contact line motion over complex walls, as demonstrated through validation tests and simulations. Its Eulerian feature facilitates implementation and provides straightforward parallelization, making it highly scalable.

A phase field formulation for dissolution-driven stress corrosion cracking

Chuanjie Cui et al.

Summary: In this study, a new theoretical and numerical framework for modelling mechanically-assisted corrosion in elastic-plastic solids is presented. The model successfully captures pitting and stress corrosion cracking, as well as the pit-to-crack transition. For the first time, the role of mechanical straining as the electrochemical driving force is incorporated. The use of a phase field paradigm helps in accurately approximating complex SCC morphologies.

On the Critical Factors for Estimating the Pit Stability Product under a Salt Film

Ke Wang et al.

Summary: Experimental, analytical, and numerical methods were used to study the pit stability product of 316L stainless steel under a salt film. Electromigration was found to play a significant role in the dissolution current and mass transport limiting current during stable pit growth. The results also showed that the diffusion coefficient of metal cations could be replaced by an equivalent diffusion coefficient.

Electrochemical corrosion parameters for active and passive reinforcing steel in carbonated and sound concrete

Muazzam G. Sohail et al.

Summary: This study provides a range of corrosion parameters necessary for steel corrosion in carbonated and noncarbonated concrete, and validates the accuracy of these parameters through experiments and simulations. By obtaining potentiodynamic polarization curves at different scan rates and extrapolating data, the corrosion parameters were successfully extracted.
