The 2022 n2c2/UW shared task on extracting social determinants of health

Summary: The n2c2/UW SDOH Challenge focuses on extracting social determinant of health (SDOH) information from clinical notes. Pretrained deep learning language models (LM) perform the best in terms of performance, generalizability, and learning transfer. The extraction performance varies based on different SDOH, achieving lower performance for risk factors like substance use and homelessness, and higher performance for protective factors like substance abstinence and living with family.

Implementation Fidelity of Chatbot Screening for Social Needs: Acceptability, Feasibility, Appropriateness

Patient perspectives of discussing social determinants of health with community pharmacists

Summary: This study aimed to characterize the perspectives of Black patients regarding social risk discussions with community pharmacists and develop a framework for these discussions. Through qualitative interviews, the perspectives of 14 Black adults living in medically underserved areas in Memphis, TN on 5 key determinants of health were gathered. The analysis identified three themes - rationale, relationship, and resources - which were used to construct the newly developed Social Determinants of Health Patient Communication Framework.

Examination of Stigmatizing Language in the Electronic Health Record

Screening and Interventions for Social Risk Factors Technical Brief to Support the US Preventive Services Task Force

Summary: Limited evidence-based guidance is available on how clinicians should screen for social risk factors and which interventions improve health outcomes related to these risk factors. Research has shown that there is a wide variation in the assessment of social risk factors, with food insecurity, financial strain, and housing instability being identified as the most important factors to address in health care settings. More randomized clinical trials are needed to guide widespread implementation of interventions targeting social risk factors in health care.
