Muscle-strengthening activities are associated with lower risk and mortality in major non-communicable diseases: a systematic review and meta-analysis of cohort studies

Haruki Mamma et al.

Summary: There is an inverse association between muscle-strengthening activities and the risk of non-communicable diseases and mortality. Performing 30-60 minutes of muscle-strengthening activities per week can reduce the risk of all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease, and total cancer. Combined muscle-strengthening and aerobic activities are also associated with a lower risk of all-cause mortality, cardiovascular disease, and total cancer.

Appendicular and mid-thigh lean mass are associated with muscle strength, physical performance, and dynamic balance in older persons at high risk of falls

Ebrahim Bani Hassan et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between muscle mass and strength and balance indices and fall risk in older persons. The results showed that appendicular and mid-thigh muscle mass and strength were associated with better dynamic balance, while the association with static balance was inconsistent.

Successful 10-second one-legged stance performance predicts survival in middle-aged and older individuals

Claudio Gil Araujo et al.

Summary: The ability to complete a 10-second one-legged stance (10-second OLS) is independently associated with all-cause mortality and adds relevant prognostic information beyond age, sex, and several other anthropometric and clinical variables. Including the 10-second OLS as part of routine physical examination in middle-aged and older adults may have potential benefits.

Disrupted sleep and risk of depression in later life: A prospective cohort study with extended follow up and a systematic review and meta-analysis

Lydia M. Hill Almeida et al.

Summary: Sleep difficulties increase the risk of depression in later life, and this relationship is unlikely to be due to reverse causality. Older adults with sleep difficulties are appropriate targets for interventions to prevent depression.

Dysfunction in dynamic, but not static balance is associated with risk of accidental falls in hemodialysis patients: a prospective cohort study

Nobuyuki Shirai et al.

Summary: This study found that dynamic balance function is associated with fall incidence in maintenance hemodialysis patients. The results of the timed-up-and-go test before and after hemodialysis were related to the number of falls, while static balance function was not related to falls.

Terminal decline in objective and self-reported measures of motor function before death: 10 year follow-up of Whitehall II cohort study

Benjamin Landre et al.

Summary: The study found a strong association between motor function in early old age and mortality, with evidence of terminal decline emerging early in overall motor function measures (timed chair rises and physical component summary score) and later in basic/instrumental ADL limitations.
