The Association of Socioeconomic Factors With Outcomes for Coronary Artery Bypass Surgery

Edward L. Hannan et al.

Summary: This study examined the impact of the Area Deprivation Index (ADI) on patients undergoing coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) surgery and found that patients with high ADIs were more likely to experience short-term mortality after the surgery. In addition, African Americans, Hispanics, and Medicaid patients were more likely to be readmitted within 30 days.

Persistence of pain and cognitive impairment in older adults

Tyler Bell et al.

Summary: This study found that the presence of persistent pain is associated with an increased risk of cognitive impairment, especially when it involves interference with daily tasks such as work and chores. The ongoing interference of pain can affect cognitive performance and may lead to cognitive impairment. Pain management may be crucial in helping to maintain cognition in old age and reduce the risk of dementia.

Link between redemption of a medical food pantry voucher and reduced hospital readmissions

Summary: This study found that food insecure patients who redeemed vouchers at a hospital-based Medical Food Pantry had a lower likelihood of subsequent hospital readmissions, particularly among women and non-white patients.

Relationship between Residential Segregation, Later-Life Cognition, and Incident Dementia across Race/Ethnicity

Daniel J. Pohl et al.

Summary: Systemic racism contributes to racial/ethnic residential segregation which leads to health inequities. The study found that living in areas with higher proportions of minoritized people was associated with lower language scores, while living in areas with higher potential contact between racial/ethnic groups was associated with higher language scores. Non-Hispanic Black adults were most likely to experience negative effects of neighborhood segregation on cognition and dementia.

The Paradox of Readmission Prevention Interventions: Missing Those Most in Need

Erik H. Hoyer et al.

Summary: Research has shown that many characteristics of high-risk patients for readmission are also associated with not receiving readmission prevention interventions. This highlights the paradox that patients at high risk of readmission are least likely to accept or receive interventions to prevent readmission.

Disparities in Preventable Hospitalization Among Patients With Alzheimer Diseases

Jie Chen et al.

Summary: The study suggests that accountable care organizations may improve care coordination for people with Alzheimer's disease and reduce disparities between Whites and African Americans. Further research is needed to determine whether this benefit can be attributed to accountable care organization formation or whether providers in these organizations tend to provide higher-quality care.

Long-Term Exposure to Particulate Air Pollution Is Associated With 30-Day Readmissions and Hospital Visits Among Patients With Heart Failure

Cavin K. Ward-Caviness et al.

Summary: The study found a positive association between long-term air pollution exposure and hospital admissions and readmissions in patients with heart failure; these results suggest the potential impact of environmental factors on hospital use among patients; even after adjusting for multiple factors, the results remained robust, emphasizing the potential for reducing hospital utilization in patients with heart failure by improving environmental pollution.

Impact of dementia: Health disparities, population trends, care interventions, and economic costs

Maria P. Aranda et al.

Summary: Dementia incidence is decreasing, but the advances in population health are uneven. Studies have identified clear disparities in the educational, geographic, and race/ethnic distribution of Alzheimer's disease and related dementias. Gaps in evidence for interventions may amplify disparities in health and healthcare, while the economic costs for persons living with dementia and their care partners' time are high and may persist into future generations.

Area Deprivation Index and Cardiac Readmissions: Evaluating Risk-Prediction in an Electronic Health Record

Amber E. Johnson et al.

Summary: This study investigated the association and predictive ability of neighborhood-level determinants, readmission risk, and mortality for heart failure, myocardial ischemia, and atrial fibrillation. The findings suggest that patients residing in socioeconomically disadvantaged communities are at higher risk of readmission and mortality following cardiac hospitalization. Measuring neighborhood deprivation can aid in identifying individuals at risk for adverse outcomes post-hospitalization.
