The Trauma Dyad: The Role of Informal Caregivers for Older Adults After Traumatic Injury

Claire M. Sokas et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between injury severity and informal caregiving received by injured older adults. The findings showed that the care needs of older adults significantly increased after injury, and these needs were mostly met by informal caregivers such as family members. The results can help caregivers understand and adapt to these changes, and facilitate post-acute care transitions.

Understanding the role of informal caregivers in postoperative care transitions for older patients

Claire M. Sokas et al.

Summary: Older adults may have new care needs and functional limitations after surgery, and many rely on informal caregivers for support. This study found that older adults living alone were more likely to be discharged to non-home locations and had higher odds of readmission, emphasizing the importance of discharge planning and care for this population.

Improving Transitions in Care for Patients and Family Caregivers Living in Rural and Underserved Areas: The Caregiver Advise, Record, Enable (CARE) Act

Joan M. Griffin et al.

Summary: Bold action is needed to improve transitions from hospitals to home for aging patients and their family caregivers in rural and underserved areas. The existing CARE Act may fall short in addressing the unique needs of these caregivers, and we recommend expanding its scope to improve care quality and safety.

Perceived discrimination, health, and well-being among adults with and without pain: a prospective study

Whitney Scott et al.

Summary: Discrimination negatively affects the health and well-being of the general population, and this study examines its impact on people with pain. The research finds that individuals with pain are more likely to experience discrimination, which is associated with poorer health, increased depressive symptoms, higher loneliness levels, and lower quality of life and life satisfaction. Discrimination also predicts the onset of pain in pain-free adults. These findings underscore the importance of addressing discrimination to improve the well-being of individuals with pain and potentially reduce the risk of pain development.
