Active repair of a dinuclear photocatalyst for visible-light-driven hydrogen production

Michael G. Pfeffer et al.

Summary: The molecular apparatus of biological photosynthesis can repair itself, while artificial photosynthetic devices can break down when their components are compromised. This study demonstrates the active repair of an artificial photosynthetic molecular device, leading to the restoration of catalytic activity. Hydrogenation of the bridging ligand was identified as the deactivation mechanism, which was repaired through the light-driven generation of singlet oxygen.

Tailoring the Energy Manifold of Quasi-Two-Dimensional Perovskites for Efficient Carrier Extraction

Sankaran Ramesh et al.

Summary: The authors successfully engineered the energy cascade manifold of quantum well states in quasi-2D Ruddlesden-Popper perovskites by tuning the organic spacer, resulting in a slower excess energy loss rate and efficient carrier extraction. 2D electronic spectroscopy provided insights into the structural and energetic disorder of these materials. The choice of the organic spacer is crucial for tailoring the coherent coupling between quantum wells and influencing the competition between the energy cascade and charge extraction.

What Next for Singlet Fission in Photovoltaics? The Fate of Triplet and Triplet-Pair Excitons

Rohan J. Hudson et al.

Summary: This Perspective article summarizes recent progress in understanding the excitonic processes contributing to the decrease in efficiency in SF-sensitized PV devices. The inconsistent classification of triplet and triplet-pair excitons and the emerging design principles for improving the separability of triplet-pair excitons are discussed. The importance of considering anisotropic triplet-exciton diffusion in the design of SF-sensitized device architectures is demonstrated. Finally, recent advances in characterizing the processes of harvesting triplet-exciton energy are examined and prospective strategies for improving efficiencies in SF-sensitized PV devices are considered.

Unusually high energy barriers for internal conversion in a {Ru(bpy)} chromophore

Agustina Cotic et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the presence of high kinetic barriers for internal conversion in anti-Kasha chromophores and provides guidelines for their design. The results highlight the importance of wavefunction symmetry in inhibiting dissipative IC and offer insights into the dissipation process at the atomistic level.

MLCT Excited-State Behavior of Trinuclear Ruthenium(II) 2,2′-Bipyridine Complexes

Simon Cerfontaine et al.

Summary: Four trinuclear ruthenium(II) polypyridyl complexes were synthesized and their excited-state properties were investigated in detail. It was observed that a para connection between the 2,2'-bipyridine chelating moieties of the bridging ligand led to a red-shifted MLCT absorption band in the visible part of the spectra.

Accessing Photoredox Transformations with an Iron(III) Photosensitizer and Green Light

Akin Aydogan et al.

Summary: Efficient excited-state electron transfer was achieved between an iron(III) photosensitizer and organic electron donors under green light irradiation, using a long-lived and luminescent ligand-to-metal charge-transfer (LMCT) excited state iron photosensitizer. The catalyst demonstrated yields exceeding 90% in a benchmark dehalogenation reaction, with enhanced stability compared to a typical photosensitizer. The initial catalytic step involved electron transfer from an amine to the photoexcited iron sensitizer, shown to occur with a large cage-escape yield, indicating potential advantages of Fe(III) photosensitizers in reductive electron transfer.
