Second Sphere Effects on Oxygen Reduction and Peroxide Activation by Mononuclear Iron Porphyrins and Related Systems

Sarmistha Bhunia et al.

Summary: Activation and reduction of O-2 and H2O2 by synthetic and biosynthetic iron porphyrin models have been proven to be a versatile platform for evaluating second-sphere effects important in natural heme active sites. By installing different functional groups around the porphyrin ligand, several second-sphere effects have been evaluated under controlled environments, providing fundamental insights into the roles played by these weak interactions in nature.

Second-Sphere Hydrogen-Bond Donors and Acceptors Affect the Rate and Selectivity of Electrochemical Oxygen Reduction by Iron Porphyrins Differently

Arnab Ghatak et al.

Summary: Controlling the factors that affect the rate and selectivity of 4e-/4H+ O2 reduction is crucial for efficient energy transformation and understanding the final step of respiration in aerobic organisms. This study explores the use of artificial systems with different second-sphere residues to enhance the rate and efficiency of O2 reduction. By investigating the behavior of an iron porphyrin complex with pendant 1,10-phenanthroline residues, the researchers discovered that the pH-dependent variations in the reaction rate are due to different intermediates formed at different pH levels. These findings, along with density functional theory calculations, provide insights into designing an efficient electrochemical O2 reduction reaction based on bioinspirations.

Optimizing Catalysis by Combining Molecular Scaling Relationships: Iron Porphyrin-Catalyzed Electrochemical Oxygen Reduction as a Case Study

Benjamin D. Groff et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates the generality of molecular scaling relationships in achieving faster catalysis at lower overpotentials. By independently controlling the characteristics of the catalyst and the buffer solution, both the maximum turnover frequency and the effective overpotential have been improved. The most optimal system is achieved with the most reducing catalyst and a weak buffered acid, which may seem counterintuitive.

Summary: This study reported on the design and synthesis of Fe porphyrin 1 with a DPEN unit, which can enhance the electrocatalytic activity for the conversion of CO2 to CO in acetonitrile. By mimicking CODH, 1 forms water-containing hydrogen-bonded networks for fast proton transfer. The DPEN unit can stabilize CO2 reduction intermediates through electrostatic and hydrogen bonding interactions.

Proton Relay in Iron Porphyrins for Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Sarmistha Bhunia et al.

Summary: The presence of proton-transfer groups near the catalyst can enhance the efficiency of the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER). Investigations show that a simple iron porphyrin can catalyze the HER at FeI state without being reduced to its formal Fe-0 state, and the rate of HER becomes almost independent of the pK(a) of the external acid used in the presence of protonated distal residues.

Pendent Relay Enhances H2O2 Selectivity during Dioxygen Reduction Mediated by Bipyridine-Based Co-N2O2 Complexes

Asa W. Nichols et al.

Summary: The selectivity of cobalt-N2O2 complexes during oxygen reduction can be modified by adjusting the ligand structure, potentially due to the influence of protonation steps. In the presence of strong acids, complexes with -pendent groups will undergo Co(III)-superoxide protonation as the rate-determining step, leading to predominantly H2O2 production.

Oriented Electrostatic Effects on O2 and CO2 Reduction by a Polycationic Iron Porphyrin

Daniel J. Martin et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that a metalloporphyrin catalyst with four cationic groups can stabilize charged intermediates and catalyze ORR and CO2RR reactions with fast rates and low overpotentials. Each of the four atropisomers of the metalloporphyrin show differences in maximum turnover frequencies and overpotentials for the two reactions, highlighting the complexity of charge positioning in affecting the thermodynamics and kinetics of multistep molecular electrochemical transformations.
