Single-Atom Catalysts with Ultrahigh Catalase-Like Activity Through Electron Filling and Orbital Energy Regulation

Zhiwei Wang et al.

Summary: This study demonstrates a regulatory mechanism based on the electron filling and orbital energies of metal active centers and provides a rational catalyst design strategy for achieving ultrahigh H2O2-decomposition activity. Among the investigated platinum-group-metal active centers, Ir-N-4 with partially occupied d(x2-y2) and d(xz) orbitals and the highest d-band center shows the strongest interaction with H2O2 and the lowest energy barrier for its decomposition. The single-atom Ir catalyst (Ir-NC) exhibits an ultrahigh H2O2-decomposition capacity, which is 1614 times higher than that of natural catalase, and surface-adsorbed atomic oxygen is identified as the key intermediate for O2 generation.

Strong Metal-Support Interaction Boosts Activity, Selectivity, and Stability in Electrosynthesis of H2O2

Junming Zhang et al.

Summary: Noble metals play a crucial role in electrochemical reactions, but their usage is limited due to high overpotential and poor stability. By modulating strong metal-support interaction (SMSI) through mechanical milling, the overall performance of Pd electrocatalysts has been improved in terms of activity, selectivity, and stability. This approach can also be extended to other noble metal systems, showing great promise for the large-scale production of highly stable and tunable electrocatalysts.

Unveiling the lattice distortion and electron-donating effects in methoxy-functionalized MOF photocatalysts for H2O2 production

Ling Yuan et al.

Summary: This study found that partial replacement of formate by methoxy in UIO-66-NH2 can significantly enhance the production of H2O2. The introduction of methoxy induces lattice distortion and changes the proton donor for the protonation of OOH* intermediate, lowering the kinetic energy barrier. Methoxy groups also have an electron-donating effect, contributing to enhanced light harvesting and charge separation. The selectivity of the methoxy-functionalized UIO-66-NH2 for 2e-ORR is also improved.

Thousand-fold increase in O2 electroreduction rates with conductive MOFs

Ruperto G. Mariano et al.

Summary: Molecular materials have been found to have low electrocatalytic activity, possibly due to limitations in O2 transport. Through experiments, it was discovered that the actual electrocatalytic activity of a 2D conductive MOF material was underestimated by at least three orders of magnitude. When this material is supported on a gas diffusion electrode, it can achieve high ORR activity and electrosynthesis rates. Precise control over multiscale mass transport can enable high-current-density electrocatalysis in molecular materials.

Dissecting p-conjugated covalent-coupling over conductive MOFs toward efficient two-electron oxygen reduction

Yuanli Li et al.

Summary: The development of conductive MOFs as efficient electrocatalysts for oxygen reduction reaction (ORR) with tunable H2O2 selectivity has been achieved based on pi-conjugated coordination chemistry, showing high preference for weakly-electrophilic Cu sites coupled with strongly-oxidized aromatic linkers in a two-electron ORR pathway, leading to impressive H2O2 selectivity and superior H2O2 yield rate. This is realized through potential-dependent dynamic-coupling hydroxyl over Cu sites triggering the self-polarization of pi-conjugated metal-ligand Cu-O-C centers, resulting in fast 2e(-) ORR kinetics.
