Free Energies of Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer Reagents and Their Applications

Rishi G. Agarwal et al.

Summary: This paper provides an update and revision to a 2010 review on proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) reagent thermochemistry, correcting systematic errors and presenting updated tables of thermochemical values. It discusses new conclusions and opportunities arising from the assembled data and techniques, emphasizing the importance of updated thermochemical cycles in PCET reactions for calculation and measurement of Gibbs free energies. Additionally, the paper introduces several emerging fields in PCET thermochemistry, highlighting the diversity of research being conducted in this rapidly growing field.

Aqueous TiO2 Nanoparticles React by Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer

Jennifer L. Peper et al.

Summary: This study investigates the relationship between the redox reactions of aqueous colloidal TiO2 nanoparticles and pH. The results show that the reduction potentials of the nanoparticles are linearly correlated to the pH values, with a coefficient of -60 +/- 5 mV/pH. Additionally, it is found that both capped and uncapped nanoparticles exhibit similar reduction potentials at low pH. Furthermore, proton-coupled electron transfer is suggested to be the preferred mode of redox reactions.

Article Innocent buffers reveal the intrinsic pH- and coverage-dependent kinetics of the hydrogen evolution reaction on noble metals

Onyu Jung et al.

Summary: Utilizing formate and borate as buffers, stable HER kinetics were analyzed on gold and platinum catalysts, revealing activation-controlled kinetic data between pH 1 and 12. The study found that the reaction order in H3O+ is fractional across the pH range due to intermediate metal-H coverage, suggesting efficiency loss arises from slow proton-coupled electron transfer (PCET) of H2O versus H3O+.

Electrochemical oxidation of Pt(111) beyond the place-exchange model

Leon Jacobse et al.

Summary: The formation of oxide plays a significant role in the degradation of Pt electrocatalysts, but its exact structure and reaction mechanism are not fully understood. In this study, in situ surface X-ray diffraction experiments were conducted to investigate the oxide formation process at a Pt(111) model electrode near the onset of the oxygen evolution reaction. The results showed that the oxidation process is strongly influenced by reaction kinetics, and a more ordered oxidized surface can be achieved by using low potential sweep rates. It was observed that the oxidation process can be divided into two consecutive steps: a place-exchange process followed by the formation of a partially disordered oxide. Additionally, the study revealed that the disordered oxide is responsible for the surface roughening observed during potential cycling.

Heterogeneous electrocatalysis goes chemical

Shannon W. Boettcher et al.

Summary: After a century of research on heterogeneous electrocatalysis, the specific mechanisms involved, particularly in the oxygen evolution reaction on IrOx, are still not fully understood. A new proposal suggests that the reaction is driven by changes in the redox state of the Ir-O active sites rather than changes in the interfacial electric field.

Proton-Coupled Defects Impact O-H Bond Dissociation Free Energies on Metal Oxide Surfaces

Robert E. Warburton et al.

Summary: The study elucidates the impact of proton-coupled defects on the bond dissociation free energies of O-H bonds on anatase TiO2 surfaces using hybrid functional periodic density functional theory. The differences in these energy values are primarily determined by differences in electron transfer driving forces, which are analyzed within a Marcus theory framework. These fundamental insights have broad implications for electrocatalysis at semiconductor surfaces.

Nanoparticle O-H Bond Dissociation Free Energies from Equilibrium Measurements of Cerium Oxide Colloids

Rishi G. Agarwal et al.

Summary: A novel equilibrium strategy is presented for measuring the hydrogen atom affinity of colloidal metal oxide nanoparticles, focusing on redox changes and H loadings of nanoceria. The measured CeO-H BDFEs span a range of 13 kcal mol(-1) and are related to the average redox state of the nanoceria colloid. The tunability of ceria BDFEs may explain its effectiveness in catalysis.

Assessment of active areas for the oxygen evolution reaction on an amorphous iridium oxide surface

Regina M. Kluge et al.

Summary: Efficient production of hydrogen from water using electrocatalysis is hindered by slow kinetics of the oxygen evolution reaction (OER). Iridium (Ir) oxide catalysts in polymer electrolyte membrane electrolysers show promising activity and stability, but the structure-activity relations are not well understood. Noise in electrochemical scanning tunnelling microscopy (n-ECSTM) measurements on amorphous iridium oxide surfaces suggest little structure-sensitivity in OER, unlike in other catalytic reactions.

Summary: The passage discusses the characteristics and control methods of degenerately doped metal-oxide nanocrystals, focusing on the influence of charge-compensating aliovalent dopants on the potentials of excess conduction-band electrons. Experimental and modeling analyses reveal significant differences between aliovalent doping and photodoping in compensating conduction-band electrons, with spectroelectrochemical techniques used to investigate these differences and enhance our understanding of these oxide nanocrystals.

Surface Electron-Hole Rich Species Active in the Electrocatalytic Water Oxidation

Juan-Jesus Velasco-Velez et al.

Summary: Iridium and ruthenium based anodes show low overpotentials and high corrosion resistance, making them ideal for the oxygen evolution reaction under harsh acidic conditions. Through advanced X-ray spectroscopy techniques, electrode nanofabrication, and DFT calculations, researchers revealed that the oxygen evolution reaction is controlled by the formation of empty Ir 5d states on the surface, while oxygen bound to three iridium centers remains dominant in the bulk. Furthermore, the study found that a high coverage of μ(1)-OO (peroxo) species during the OER is excluded, and a higher surface-to-bulk ratio in thinner electrodes enhances material usage.
