Mediating the Oxidizing Capability of Surface-Bound Hydroxyl Radicals Produced by Photoelectrochemical Water Oxidation to Convert Glycerol into Dihydroxyacetone

Yang Liu et al.

Summary: In this study, a ternary photoanode material was developed for the selective oxidation of glycerol to 1,3-dihydroxyacetone. The photoanode showed high selectivity and kinetic response, with hydroxyl radicals generated by water oxidation playing a dominant role as active oxygen species. The oxidation product obtained mainly came from water. The role of different components in enhancing the selectivity and catalyzing the reaction was revealed through spectroscopic and computational studies.

Energy-saving H2 production from a hybrid acid/alkali electrolyzer assisted by anodic glycerol oxidation

Bowen Liu et al.

Summary: Water electrolysis is an promising technology for hydrogen production, but the oxygen evolution reaction (OER) at the anode hinders its efficiency. The use of glycerol oxidation reaction (GOR) as an alternative to OER is a potential solution. In this study, a Cu-Cu2O/C electrocatalytic electrode was fabricated for GOR, exhibiting high activity and selectivity for formate production. Furthermore, a hybrid acid/alkali electrolyzer was assembled, achieving efficient water electrolysis with high faradaic efficiency for hydrogen and formate production.
