Platinum-Water Interaction Induced Interfacial Water Orientation That Governs the pH-Dependent Hydrogen Oxidation Reaction

Li Li et al.

Summary: This study constructed explicit Pt(111)-H2O interface models in both acidic and alkaline conditions, finding that the orientation of interfacial water induced by Pt-water interaction governs the kinetics of HOR in alkaline conditions. In alkali, the strong Pt-interfacial water electrostatic interaction increases the proportion of H-down interfacial water and suppresses the Volmer step of HOR by forming a solvated complex.

High-Performance Ru2P Anodic Catalyst for Alkaline Polymer Electrolyte Fuel Cells

Yuanmeng Zhao et al.

Summary: Exploring efficient and economical electrocatalysts and understanding the mechanism for alkaline hydrogen oxidation reaction are crucial for the development of alkaline polymer electrolyte fuel cells. In this study, Ru2P was synthesized and used as an anodic electrocatalyst, achieving a high peak power density. The enhanced hydrogen binding energy, adsorption strength of oxygenated species, and reduced work function of Ru2P contributed to the improved HOR performance. The normalized exchange current densities of Ru2P/C were significantly higher than those of Ru, demonstrating its potential as a highly active Pt-free HOR electrocatalyst.

Enhancing Hydrogen Oxidation and Evolution Kinetics by Tuning the Interfacial Hydrogen-Bonding Environment on Functionalized Platinum Surfaces

Kaiyue Zhao et al.

Summary: Developing efficient catalytic systems for the hydrogen oxidation and evolution reactions is crucial for transitioning to renewable energy. It has been recognized that the activity of these reactions depends on the properties of the electrochemical interface rather than just the catalyst's composition and structure. In this study, the authors demonstrate that specifically adsorbed organic additives can enhance the intrinsic activity of polycrystalline Pt for the HOR/HER reactions by up to a factor of 3 by introducing weakly hydrogen-bonded water. This work highlights the potential of electrochemical interfacial engineering to enhance electrocatalytic performance.

Hydrogen bond network connectivity in the electric double layer dominates the kinetic pH effect in hydrogen electrocatalysis on Pt

Peng Li et al.

Summary: This study investigates the origin of the large kinetic pH effect in hydrogen electrocatalysis and reveals the significant difference in the connectivity of hydrogen-bond networks in electric double layers between acid and alkaline environments. The research shows that OH adsorption plays a crucial role in improving the kinetics of alkaline hydrogen electrocatalysis by increasing the connectivity of hydrogen-bond networks. These findings emphasize the importance of electric double layer structures in electrocatalysis.

Fei-Yue Gao et al.

Summary: The cost of fuel cell systems can be greatly reduced by developing hydroxide exchange membrane fuel cells (HEMFCs) based on platinum group metal-free (PGM-free) catalysts. Nickel-molybdenum-niobium metallic glasses are reported as PGM-free hydrogen oxidation reaction (HOR) catalysts, which demonstrate excellent catalytic performance and stability in alkaline electrolyte. They enable high power densities in H-2/O-2 and H-2/air fuel cells with negligible performance degradation.

The Interrelated Effect of Cations and Electrolyte pH on the Hydrogen Evolution Reaction on Gold Electrodes in Alkaline Media

Akansha Goyal et al.

Summary: Increasing the alkali metal cation concentration enhances the activity of the hydrogen evolution reaction on gold electrodes, while increasing the electrolyte pH indirectly affects the reaction activity by tuning the near-surface cation concentration. However, too high near-surface cation concentration can lead to a decrease in the reaction activity due to surface blockage.
