Modelling reaction kinetics of distonic radical ions: a systematic investigation of phenyl-type radical addition to unsaturated hydrocarbons

Oisin J. Shiels et al.

Summary: Gas phase ion-molecule reactions play a significant role in chemical processes. These reactions often exhibit an inverse relationship between temperature and reaction rate due to a submerged barrier. The reaction kinetics of radical ions in ion-molecule reactions are less explored. This study reports experimental rate coefficients for the reaction between C2H2 or C2H4 and eighteen distonic radical ions, and models the rate coefficients using potential energy schemes and a statistical reaction-rate model.

Electrostatically Tuning the Photodissociation of the Irgacure 2959 Photoinitiator in the Gas Phase by Cation Binding

Samuel J. P. Marlton et al.

Summary: In this study, the low-lying electronic states of the Norrish-type I photoinitiator Irgacure 2959 complexed with a single metal cation were investigated using photodissociation action spectroscopy in the gas phase. The charge of the cations was found to influence the key electronic energy levels, leading to shifts in the electronic states. The oriented electric field generated by the cation affects the energy gap between different electronic states, ultimately impacting the yield of radical photoproducts.

Reactivity Trends in the Gas-Phase Addition of Acetylene to the N-Protonated Aryl Radical Cations of Pyridine, Aniline, and Benzonitrile

Oisin J. Shiels et al.

Summary: This study investigates gas-phase ion-molecule reactions of acetylene with nine aromatic distonic sigma-type radical cations derived from various ions. The results show that rate coefficients vary with the position of the radical, and reactivity trends can be rationalized based on the stability of prereactive complexes.
