Highly oxidized U(vi) within the smallest fullerene: gas-phase synthesis and computational study of boron-doped U@C27B

Antonio Moreno-Vicente et al.

Summary: The smallest borafullerene U@C27B has been synthesized and detected as the most abundant species in the U@C2n-1B family using a laser vaporization cluster source. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations reveal that the U atom is located at the center of the cage and interacts with all its atoms in a similar way as a 28-hapto ligand. The spin density is distributed over the cage, indicating that U is formally U(vi), despite not being bonded to highly electronegative atoms like O, F, N or Cl. Overall, the synthesis of this exotic radical contributes to the understanding of the unique host-guest chemistry in endohedral metallofullerenes.

Assembly of Uranyl Peroxides from Ball Milled Solids

Patrick A. Julien et al.

Summary: The research indicates that insoluble uranium solids can be transformed into highly soluble uranyl peroxide compounds in the presence of a small amount of water, which has potential applications in uranium processing in both the front and back end of the nuclear fuel cycle.

Gamma-Ray-Induced Formation of Uranyl Peroxide Cage Clusters

Daniel E. Felton et al.

Summary: Irradiation of LiUT solutions with gamma rays results in the formation of Li-U-24 clusters, whereas no intermediates are observed in the O-18 labeled copper-catalyzed reaction. Water radiolysis products play a key role in driving the conversion.

Characterization of a strong covalent Th3+-Th3+ bond inside an Ih(7)-C80 fullerene cage

Jiaxin Zhuang et al.

Summary: Studying the nature of actinide-actinide bonds is crucial for understanding the electronic structure of the 5f elements, but the synthesis of these chemical bonds remains highly challenging. In this study, a strong covalent Th-Th bond formed between two rarely accessible Th3+ ions is reported.

A crystalline tri-thorium cluster with σ-aromatic metal-metal bonding

Josef T. Boronski et al.

Summary: Actinide-actinide bonding is typically predicted to be weak and difficult to observe under normal conditions, but the experimental discovery of thorium-thorium bonding in a crystalline cluster has revealed a new type of sigma-aromatic bond that challenges previous theoretical predictions. This discovery extends delocalized sigma-aromatic bonding to the heaviest elements in the periodic table and offers a new approach to studying actinide-actinide bonding.
