Restructuring and Activation of Cu(111) under Electrocatalytic Reduction Conditions

Dongfang Cheng et al.

Summary: The dynamic restructuring of Cu surfaces in electroreduction conditions was investigated using first-principles calculations and operando electrochemical scanning tunneling microscopy experiments. The restructuring of Cu(111) in acidic electrolyte was found to be potential- and pH-dependent. The strong adsorption of H atoms on the surface induced the formation of Cu adatoms, creating highly active sites for the hydrogen evolution reaction.

A Well-Defined Anionic Dicopper(I) Monohydride Complex that Reacts like a Cluster

Roel L. M. Bienenmann et al.

Summary: In this study, the first structurally characterized anionic dicopper hydride complex was described. The complex displayed distinct reactivity compared to low-nuclearity copper hydrides, resembling that of copper hydride clusters. This difference in reactivity was attributed to the tightly bound dinuclear core within the dinucleating ligand scaffold.

Current global efforts are insufficient to limit warming to 1.5°C

H. Damon Matthews et al.

Summary: Human activities have led to a global temperature increase, and current trends suggest that we will exceed 1.5 degrees Celsius in less than 10 years. Overcoming inertia in political and technological systems is the primary obstacle to achieving the 1.5 degrees Celsius goal. Political and corporate leadership, along with increased societal recognition, are necessary for system-level and individual lifestyle changes.

Challenges and Opportunities in Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction to Chemicals and Fuels

Xiaojie She et al.

Summary: This review discusses the practical challenges in the industrial chain that hinder the scaling-up deployment of the ECO2R technology. High Faradaic efficiencies and current densities have been achieved for the ECO2R to CO/HCOOH and ECO2R to C2H4 reactions, indicating that ECO2R may have reached the stage for scale-up. The aim is to provide insights that can accelerate the development of the ECO2R technology.

Quantification of Hydride Coverage on Cu(111) by Electrochemical Mass Spectrometry

David Raciti et al.

Summary: Electrochemical mass spectrometry (EC-MS) combined with chronoamperometry was used to quantify the coverage of surface hydride phase on Cu(111) in 0.1 mol/L H2SO4. The study tracked the 2 atomic mass unit (amu) signal for H2 production and charge passed to examine anion desorption, hydride formation, and the hydrogen evolution reaction (HER).

Summary: The study expanded the equilibrium acidity scale in acetonitrile, now containing 231 acids linked by 569 Delta pK(a) measurements, spanning 30 orders of magnitude. Correlation equations were developed for estimating pK(a) values in different solvents based on values in acetonitrile, demonstrating a sufficient accuracy for many applications. This scale is expected to be a useful tool for various research areas such as organic chemistry, electrochemical power sources, and catalysis.

Access to Metal Centers and Fluxional Hydride Coordination Integral for CO2 Insertion into [Fe3(μ-H)3]3+ Clusters

Dae Ho Hong et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates the balanced effect of sterics and hydride accessibility on CO2 insertion into tri(mu-hydrido) triiron(II) clusters ligated by a tris(beta-diketiminate) cyclophane. Experimental results show that decreased sterics result in lower activation energy barrier and increased kinetic isotope effect, while no correlation is found between reaction rate and solvent or Lewis acids for another complex, suggesting CO2 coordination to an Fe center in the mechanism. The observed hydricity estimate and DFT calculations both indicate the influence of mu(3)-hydride coordination on the first CO2 insertion event.

Revisiting Understanding of Electrochemical CO2 Reduction on Cu(111): Competing Proton-Coupled Electron Transfer Reaction Mechanisms Revealed by Embedded Correlated Wavefunction Theory

Qing Zhao et al.

Summary: Copper electrodes are widely used in CO2 reduction reaction and play a key role in determining the reaction mechanisms using DFT. This study corrected the XC functional error using ECW theory and predicted the formation of different intermediates on Cu(111) under different mechanisms and applied potentials. Including explicitly modeled solvent molecules is important in predicting electron-transfer barriers and overreliance on simple surface models may lead to pitfalls in predicting reduction reactions.

Metal carbonyl clusters of groups 8-10: synthesis and catalysis

Cristiana Cesari et al.

Summary: In the past three decades, significant progress has been made in the chemistry of metal carbonyl clusters, with advancements in synthetic methods leading to higher-nuclearity clusters. Research into the electronic structure of metal carbonyl clusters has provided a better understanding and the potential for using molecular chemistry tools to probe their properties. Metal carbonyl clusters have emerged as stable and effective catalysts for reductive electrocatalysis reactions, particularly due to their delocalized bonding and electron-withdrawing CO ligands.
