Thermal and (Thermo-Reversible) Photochemical Cycloisomerization of 1H-2-Benzo[c]oxocins: From Synthetic Applications to the Development of a New T-Type Molecular Photoswitch

Minghui Zhou et al.

Summary: A new T-type molecular photoswitch based on the reversible cyclization of 1H-2-benzo[c]oxocins has been developed. The switching mechanism involves light-triggered ring contraction and thermal ring-opening processes. The new molecular-switching platform exhibits independence from solvent polarity and is suitable for biological applications. The reactions proceed with good efficiency and can be easily adjusted via structural functionalization.

Photoswitching neutral homoaromatic hydrocarbons

Trung Tran Ngoc et al.

Summary: In this study, a class of stable neutral homoaromatic molecules was successfully synthesized and their existence was confirmed by experimental evidence and computational analysis. Additionally, it was discovered that one of these molecules can undergo reversible photochemical rearrangement, acting as a photoswitch. These findings provide important insights into the study of homoconjugative interactions in organic molecules and the design of responsive molecular materials.

An Eight-State Molecular Sequential Switch Featuring a Dual Single-Bond Rotation Photoreaction

Aaron Gerwien et al.

Summary: Photoswitches usually face limitations in interconverting between two states, but a new photoswitching concept allows for precise switching between eight different states. By controlling rotations around three adjacent covalent bonds, all eight states can be populated. Changing the solvent and temperature enables switching between different cycles instead of just converting five isomers in a selective sequence.

An All-Organic Photochemical Magnetic Switch with Bistable Spin States

Konstantin Guenther et al.

Summary: We synthesized and operated two all-organic molecular spin-state switches that can be switched from a diamagnetic to a paramagnetic form through a reversible electrocyclic reaction. These switches can be easily activated by LED light source at low temperatures. The switches have significant research and application prospects.

Stepwise Photochromism of Bis(Imidazole Dimer) Bridged by a Sulfur Atom

Katsuya Mutoh et al.

Summary: We have developed a stepwise photochromic imidazole dimer bridged by a sulfur atom. One-photon absorption leads to the formation of a colored biradical species, which quickly recombines to the original imidazole dimer following first-order reaction kinetics. The biradical species undergoes further photochemical reactions to produce a long-lived colored species, which displays intermolecular dimerization.

Orthogonal- and Path-Dependent Photo/Acidoswitching in an Eight-State Dihydroazulene-Spiropyran Dyad

Mathias Dowds et al.

Summary: This paper presents a method for synthesizing a compound containing two photoswitchable units. By controlling the switching of these two units, selective switching between eight different states can be achieved. This research is important for understanding the polymorphism of molecules and their light-controllable functionalities.

Excitation wavelength- and intensity-dependent stepwise two-photon-induced photochromic reaction

Katsuya Mutoh et al.

Summary: In recent years, photochromic molecules with wavelength-selective or light intensity-dependent photoresponses have gained increasing attention. This study presents the design of stepwise two-photon induced photochromic molecules (PABI-PIC and PABI-PIC2) consisting of two different photochromic units. The stepwise photochromic properties of these molecules can be easily controlled depending on the excitation light intensity and wavelength. These molecular designs are important for the development of advanced photoresponsive materials.

Recent advances in low-power-threshold nonlinear photochromic materials

Yoichi Kobayashi et al.

Summary: Incoherent nonlinear photophysical and photochemical processes based on stepwise two-photon absorption (2PA) have been widely used in materials science due to their unique photoresponses. Nonlinear photochromic materials, in particular, have attracted considerable attention for their unconventional photoresponses and low power thresholds. This tutorial review introduces the concepts and applications of low-power-threshold nonlinear photochromic materials using stepwise 2PA processes. It provides a comprehensive understanding of the scientific progress in this field and offers a unified picture of the incoherent nonlinear optical properties of various photofunctional materials.

A Qualitative Measure of Diradical Character Based on Radical-Radical Coupling Reaction

Moe Nishijima et al.

Summary: This study proposes a relationship between the diradical character and radical-radical coupling reaction rate of the light-induced radical pair of photochromic biimidazoles, and suggests that the aromaticity of the bridging unit connecting two imidazole rings can alter the diradical character and accelerate the reaction rate.

Dynamic Spin-Spin Interaction Observed as Interconversion of Chemical Bonds in Stepwise Two-Photon Induced Photochromic Reaction

Katsuya Mutoh et al.

Summary: The study investigates the stepwise photochromic properties of biphotochromic molecules involving multiple spin interactions using double-pulse laser flash photolysis. The photochromic reaction generates the o-biradical form which thermally isomerizes to the o-quinoidal form and reaches thermal equilibrium between them. Additional photon absorption by the open-closed form leads to the generation of unpaired spins at the p-position of the central aromatic bridge of the biradical or quinoidal form, resulting in dynamic spin-spin interactions and rearrangement of chemical bonds.
