Synthesis and properties of MoAlB composites reinforced with SiC particles

Weiwei Zhang et al.

Summary: Novel MoAlB composites reinforced with SiC have been prepared and characterized. The 5 vol% SiC/MoAlB composite exhibited improved mechanical properties and enhanced oxidation resistance. The formation of a dense and continuous scale composed of Al2O3 and SiO2 contributed to the improved oxidation resistance.

Grain-size dependent thermal conductivity of Gd2Zr2O7 ceramics

Haomin Wang et al.

Summary: This work investigates the grain-size dependent thermal conductivity of Gd2Zr2O7 ceramics. It finds that the thermal conductivity limit can be reached when the grain size is reduced to around 7.5 nm. The low thermal conductivity can be attributed to the high volume fraction of grain boundary/triple junction phases in the nanocrystalline GZO ceramic, which is comparable to that of the grain phase. This study demonstrates that reducing grain size is an effective strategy to decrease thermal conductivity in polycrystalline materials.

MicroStructural Hierarchy Descriptor (μSHD)-property correlations of silicon carbide ceramics

Zhiheng Huang et al.

Summary: A systematic and extensible framework for quantification of structural hierarchy is crucial for understanding the structure-property correlation of SiC ceramics. The microstructural hierarchy descriptor (mu SHD) can be used to identify correlations between properties and different hierarchical levels in the microstructure. Different levels of hierarchy in the microstructure can affect the mechanical strength, toughness, thermal conductivity, and electrical resistivity of SiC ceramics.

Low-temperature densification of high-entropy (Ti,Zr,Nb,Ta,Mo)C-Co composites with high hardness and high toughness

Si-Chun Luo et al.

Summary: This study successfully prepared (Ti,Zr,Nb,Ta,Mo)C ceramics with high hardness and high toughness using a liquid-phase sintering process combined with a Co-based liquid-phase extrusion strategy. The densification temperature was significantly reduced to 1350 degrees C, and part of the Co-based liquid-phase was removed during the sintering, resulting in a lower Co content in the ceramic.

Pyrochlore-based high-entropy ceramics for capacitive energy storage

Yiying CHEN et al.

Summary: High-performance dielectrics are crucial materials for capacitor devices in high-power systems, electric vehicles, and aerospace. This study presents a novel pyrochlore component with high-entropy design, which exhibits excellent energy storage performance and ultra-high energy efficiency. The temperature coefficient is greatly improved, demonstrating potential applications in temperature-reliable conditions. The high-entropy design provides a new strategy for enhancing the high energy storage performance of ceramic materials.

Influence of equiatomic Zr/(Ti,Nb) substitution on microstructure and ultra-high strength of (Ti,Zr,Nb)C medium-entropy ceramics at 1900 °C

Qingqing Yang et al.

Summary: The effects of equiatomic Zr/(Ti,Nb) substitution on the microstructure and high-temperature strength of (Ti,Zr,Nb)C medium-entropy ceramics were investigated. Results showed that refining grain size and increasing Zr content can enhance flexural strength at 1900 degrees C.
