A study on WC-Ni cemented carbides: Constitution, alloy compositions and properties, including corrosion behaviour

R. Steinlechner et al.

Summary: The manuscript systematically studied three groups of Ni-based cemented carbides compared to a standard Co-based system, highlighting higher solubility of alloying elements in Ni binder, the effect of carbon content on alloying, and superior corrosion resistance of high-alloyed NiCr and NiCrMo materials.

Microstructure and mechanical properties of WC or Mo2C modified NbC-Ni cermets

J. H. Huang et al.

Summary: The influence of up to 15 vol% WC or Mo2C addition on Ni bonded NbC matrix cermets was assessed in this study. Thermodynamic modelling, microstructure and phase analysis were used to study the constituent phases and dissolution of W/Mo in the binder and NbC phases. The study discussed the phase evolution, solid solution formation, and evaluated fracture toughness, Vickers hardness, and transverse rupture strength.

Influence of Cr3C2 and VC Content on WC Grain Size, WC Shape and Mechanical Properties of WC-6.0 wt. % Co Cemented Carbides

Chao Yin et al.

Summary: The study found that increasing the Cr3C2/VC content leads to a decrease in WC grain size and a change in shape, with hardness increasing and fracture toughness decreasing as a result. When the dopants exceed the maximum solubility in the Co phase, detrimental carbides for the TRS and impact toughness of the cemented carbide are formed.

Fabrication of metastable dual-phase Mo2C-20 mass%Ni cermet through carbon content control and rapid cooling and its transverse rapture strength

Hiroyuki Nakayama et al.

Summary: A Mo2C-20 mass%Ni dual-phase cermet was successfully fabricated in this study, with an increase in carbon content and higher cooling rate suppressing the formation of the eta-phase. The cermet showed transverse rapture strengths of 1.7 and 2.0 GPa after sintering in vacuum and N-2, respectively. Fracturing initiated at micropores near the tension side and occurred in a transgranular mode. These findings could benefit the development of other dual-phase cermets with good mechanical properties.

Abnormal WC crystal growth from liquid Co flux occurs via eta phase decomposition

Maxim Vreeswijk et al.

Summary: The growth mechanism of large WC crystals from a liquid Co-based flux has been identified, where abnormal grains nucleate on the (W,Co)(6)C eta phase and consume it through a carburisation reaction. By adopting the eutectic composition, the size of abnormal grains is enhanced. This growth mechanism could be applied to various metal carbides with similar diffusion rates.
