Multi-target 2D tracking method for singing humpback whales using vector sensors

Ludovic Tenorio-Halle et al.

Summary: Acoustic vector sensors estimate the direction of travel of acoustic waves by measuring pressure and motion, allowing for determination of the source location through triangulation. This study demonstrates the use of two-dimensional vector sensors to generate azimuthal tracks of singing humpback whales and link them between sensors using cross-correlation. By utilizing at least two vector sensors, simultaneous localization and tracking of whales in latitude and longitude can be achieved.

Eavesdropping at the Speed of Light: Distributed Acoustic Sensing of Baleen Whales in the Arctic

Lea Bouffaut et al.

Summary: In a post-industrial whaling world, traditional monitoring methods do not provide sufficient data for evaluating and mitigating the impacts of increasing climatic and anthropogenic pressures on whale conservation. This study presents the first case of wildlife monitoring using distributed acoustic sensing (DAS) by repurposing sub-sea telecommunication fiber optic cables. The success of this method in the Arctic suggests its potential for real-time and low-cost monitoring of whales worldwide with unprecedented coverage and spatial resolution.

Tracking time differences of arrivals of multiple sound sources in the presence of clutter and missed detections

Pina Gruden et al.

Summary: Acoustic line transect surveys are often used with visual methods to estimate marine mammal populations. This study introduces a multi-target tracking method for automated TDOA tracking, utilizing measurements from broadband echolocation clicks and narrowband whistles for extracting more information from acoustic encounters.

Long-Term Patterns of Noise From Underwater Explosions and Their Relation to Fisheries in Southern California

Anna Krumpel et al.

Summary: Acoustic deterrents, such as seal bombs, are used in commercial fishing to protect gear and catch from marine mammal predation, but they contribute to underwater noise pollution. This study in Southern California found a correlation between underwater explosions and market squid purse-seine fishing, with a decline in seal bomb use over the years. Further research is needed to understand the effects of seal bomb use on marine life and establish environmental regulations for their use.

Model-based localization of deep-diving cetaceans using towed line array acoustic data

Yvonne M. Barkley et al.

Summary: Passive acoustic monitoring using towed line arrays is a standard method for localizing cetaceans during surveys, but most existing methods do not account for uncertainties in the acoustic data, leading to biased estimates for deep-diving cetaceans. A model-based three-dimensional localization approach provides more accurate estimates by incorporating sources of error and considering sound propagation effects.

Scalable Detection and Tracking of Geometric Extended Objects

Florian Meyer et al.

Summary: The paper proposes a factor graph formulation and a particle-based algorithm for scalable detection and tracking of extended objects, providing an effective solution for multiobject tracking. The method dynamically introduces states of newly detected objects and jointly infers the geometric shapes of objects, enabling scalable extended object tracking.
