Association between hospital safety-net burden and receipt of trimodality therapy and survival for patients with esophageal cancer

Muhammad M. Qureshi et al.

Summary: This study examined the relationship between hospital safety-net burden and receipt of surgery after chemoradiation as well as survival in esophageal cancer patients. The results showed that patients in hospitals with high safety-net burden were less likely to undergo surgery after chemoradiation, but there were no significant differences in survival.

Disparities in esophageal cancer care based on race: a National Cancer Database analysis

Ikenna C. Okereke et al.

Summary: This article investigates the effects of racial disparities on the treatment and outcome of esophageal cancer patients in our country. The study reveals that minority patients are more likely to be diagnosed in advanced stages, receive less surgery, and have worse survival, with African Americans having the lowest survival rate. However, Hispanics and Asians show improved survival compared to Caucasians. Racial disparities likely contribute to the outcome of esophageal cancer.

Randomized Phase II Study of PET Response-Adapted Combined Modality Therapy for Esophageal Cancer: Mature Results of the CALGB 80803 (Alliance) Trial

Karyn A. Goodman et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the use of early assessment of chemotherapy responsiveness by PET imaging to tailor therapy for patients with esophageal and esophagogastric junction adenocarcinoma. Results showed improved pathologic complete response rates in PET nonresponders, with PET responders to FOLFOX achieving a promising 5-year overall survival of 53%.
