Quantitative analysis of fracture evolution in fold: Insights from FDEM modelling

Siyu Wei et al.

Summary: This study investigates the fracturing mechanism in buckle folds using an improved FDEM modeling approach, finding that different fold geometries significantly influence the development of fractures, while the initiation and propagation of major fracture sets are closely related to the evolutionary history of the fold.

Evolution of fracture networks and connectivity during fault-bend folding: Insights from the Sinon Anticline in the southwestern Hongseong-Imjingang Belt, Korea

Inho Kim et al.

Summary: This study investigates the characteristics and evolution of fold-related fracture networks in the Sinon Anticline, South Korea. The complexity of the fracture networks reflects the spatiotemporal variation in strain pattern, and their connectivity and fluid flow properties are controlled by structural positions and mechanical stratigraphy.

Controls of fault-bend fold on natural fractures: Insight from discrete element simulation and outcrops in the southern margin of the Junggar Basin, Western China

Zhe Mao et al.

Summary: This study utilized outcrops and the discrete element method (DEM) to simulate and analyze the characteristics, distribution patterns, and development mechanisms of natural fractures in the fault-bend fold. By integrating the deformation history with fracture types and development characteristics, a development pattern of fractures within the fault-bend fold has been established. The results provide guidance for locating favorable reservoirs in foreland thrust belts.

Cenozoic multi-phase intracontinental deformation of the Tianshan Range (NW China): Constraints from detrital zircon provenance and syn-tectonic sedimentation of the Kuqa Depression

Xiang Qin et al.

Summary: Influenced by the India-Eurasia collision, the Tianshan Range and Kuqa Depression underwent multiple phases of intracontinental tectonic activation. The sediments in the Kuqa Depression recorded the basin-mountain coupling process. This study conducted detailed structural investigations, stratigraphic analysis, and detrital zircon U-Pb dating to reconstruct the uplift history of the South Tianshan Range. The results indicate that the deformation and uplift of the Tianshan Range were initiated in the Early Eocene and continued throughout the Cenozoic.

Fracture effectiveness evaluation in ultra-deep reservoirs based on geomechanical method, Kuqa Depression, Tarim Basin, NW China

Ke Xu et al.

Summary: Onshore ultra-deep oil and gas resources are abundant and the effectiveness of fractures is crucial for the development of these reservoirs. This study focuses on the DB-4 ultra-deep gas reservoir in the Kuqa Depression and analyzes the fracture characteristics and effectiveness using geomechanical methods. The relationship between fracture effectiveness and oil and gas production capacity is established through simulated fracture opening. The findings provide geological reference for the efficient development of ultra-deep oil and gas resources in the Kuqa Depression and similar fractured reservoirs around the world.

Geomorphology of contractional salt tectonics along the Kuqa fold-thrust belt, northwestern China: Testing pre-kinematic diapir versus source-fed thrust and detachment fold models

Blessing Adeoti et al.

Summary: The Kuqa fold-thrust belt in China is known for its diverse surface salt structures. By studying the geomorphological features of lateral ridge propagation along the belt, researchers have found evidence supporting the formation of the belt through a combination of detachment folding and source-fed thrust faults.

Kinematics of fault-propagation folding: Analysis of velocity fields in numerical modeling simulations

Berenice Plotek et al.

Summary: This study investigates the kinematics of fault-propagation folding using complex numerical models. The results show that visco-plastic models can be approximated using a high apical angle trishear kinematic model, while considering elastic deformation requires a lower apical angle. Furthermore, folds involving salt layers need higher apical angle values, while more competent sedimentary rocks need lower values.

Influence of ramp geometry and orientation on fault propagation folding: Insights from the 3D finite element method

Anis Khalifeh-Soltani et al.

Summary: Structural geologists have extensively studied fault-related folds and their evolution using 3D finite-element models. The study concludes that the friction coefficient and ramp geometry significantly influence fault-propagation folds, with concave ramps and variations in friction changing the folding styles. These findings highlight the importance of these factors in the structural evolution of fault-related folding.

Analysis of fault bend folding kinematic models and comparison with an analog experiment

Berenice Plotek et al.

Summary: The study found that the backlimb trishear model can better simulate the geometry and displacement field of fault bend folds, while other kinematic models can only explain partially. Additionally, by adjusting the asymmetry angles and apical angles in the backlimb trishear model, the shape of the folds can be controlled and the velocity of particles can be affected.

Geomechanical modelling of fault-propagation folds: Estimating the influence of the internal friction angle and friction coefficient

Anis Khalifeh-Soltani et al.

Summary: The study highlights the importance of analyzing structural aspects of fault-related folds in both hydrocarbon exploration and seismic data interpretation. The results show that stress-strain patterns are similar in different parts of a fault-propagation fold, and factors like internal friction angle and friction coefficient play key roles in determining fault-related fold style. Additional detachment affects stress-strain patterns at specific sections of the fold, emphasizing its influence on structural evolution.
