Driving rapidly while remaining in control: classical shortcuts from Hamiltonian to stochastic dynamics

David Guery-Odelin et al.

Summary: Stochastic thermodynamics provides a new perspective to analyze heat, work, and entropy production for individual stochastic trajectories of mesoscopic systems. It introduces time into thermodynamic processes through stochastic equations of motion, enabling fine control. This article reviews various strategies for realizing finite-time state-to-state transformations in stochastic systems, such as over and underdamped regimes, and discusses the connection between arbitrary states and non-equilibrium steady states.

Monte Carlo Simulation of Stochastic Differential Equation to Study Information Geometry

Abhiram Anand Thiruthummal et al.

Summary: Information Geometry is a useful tool to study and compare the solutions of a Stochastic Differential Equations (SDEs) for non-equilibrium systems. In this paper, a new method using Monte Carlo simulation is proposed to calculate time-dependent probability density functions (PDFs) and study Information Geometry. The advantages of the Monte Carlo SDE simulation over the Fokker-Planck method are showcased by calculating unequal time joint PDFs.

Information Geometry, Fluctuations, Non-Equilibrium Thermodynamics, and Geodesics in Complex Systems

Eun-jin Kim

Summary: Information theory provides an interdisciplinary method to understand important phenomena, with information geometric theory being particularly useful for quantifying the evolution of information over time. Recent developments in this theory focus on dynamic aspects of non-equilibrium processes, discussing the role of information rate, relative entropy, and information length in thermodynamic relations. The implications of geodesic solutions in information geometry for self-organization and control are also explored.

Bayesian mechanics for stationary processes

Lancelot Da Costa et al.

Summary: This paper presents a Bayesian mechanics model for adaptive systems, using a Markov blanket to model the interface between the system and its environment, representing adaptive systems as Markov blankets, and partitioning the blanket into sensory and active states to demonstrate that active states can engage in active inference and stochastic control.

Stochastic Chaos and Markov Blankets

Karl Friston et al.

Summary: In this treatment, a discussion on the existence and identification of conditional independencies in random dynamical systems at nonequilibrium steady-state was conducted. It was found that these independencies lead to a partition of states, with internal states separated statistically from external states by blanket states. Utilizing the Lorenz system, the steady-state density was parameterized in terms of surprisal or self-information, allowing for the identification of Markov blankets to characterize the coupling between internal and external states in a generalized synchrony. This synchronization could potentially serve as a mathematical basis for a fundamental form of sentience in biology.

Information Geometric Theory in the Prediction of Abrupt Changes in System Dynamics

Adrian-Josue Guel-Cortez et al.

Summary: The research investigates the prediction capability of information theory in detecting and measuring abrupt changes in a system. It finds that information length diagnostics outperforms information flow in predicting sudden events, and reveals limitations of information flow in measuring perturbations that do not affect entropy.

Information geometry and non-equilibrium thermodynamic relations in the over-damped stochastic processes

Eun-jin Kim

Summary: Information geometry theory is an advantageous method for understanding complexity, allowing us to describe the characteristics of time-varying, non-equilibrium processes by measuring the change in information along the evolution path of a stochastic variable. By linking it with thermodynamic concepts, we can further explain the meaning of information length and information rate, as well as their relationship with entropy production and self-organization.
