Benthic bacterial communities and bacteria-environment interactions after Kandelia obovata introduction and Spartina alterniflora invasion in Yueqing Bay, China

Li Song et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of Kandelia obovata and Spartina alterniflora on sediment properties and bacterial communities. The results showed that K. obovata sediments had higher soil organic carbon contents and exhibited higher heavy metals, while S. alterniflora habitats had more bacteria beneficial to plant growth. The study revealed that the impacts of K. obovata introduction outweighed S. alterniflora invasion on local ecosystems.

Pollution characteristics and source analysis of heavy metals in surface sediments of Luoyuan Bay, Fujian

Yifei Fan et al.

Summary: The study revealed that the concentrations of heavy metals V, Cr, Co, Ni, Cu, Zn, Cd, and Pb in the surface sediments of Luoyuan Bay exceeded the marine sediment quality standards, indicating a potential ecological hazard. Higher concentrations of heavy metals were observed in the north and lower concentrations in the south, with V, Al, Co, Ni, and Pb originating from weathering and erosion of rocks and industrial wastewater discharge, while Cu, Zn, Cr, and Cd were primarily associated with ship transportation and repair, and marine aquaculture activities.

A comparative study of sediment-bound trace elements and iron-bearing minerals in S. alterniflora and mudflat regions

Dan Yang et al.

Summary: This study compared the sediment characteristics between halophyte plants habitat and mudflats in intertidal habitats, showing higher concentrations of trace elements in sediment associated with S. alterniflora in Beihai. Variations in magnetic minerals accumulation in different sites explained the differences in sediment-bound As, Hg, Sb, Cd and Sc between S. alterniflora and mudflats.

Underestimated PAH accumulation potential of blue carbon vegetation: Evidence from sedimentary records of saltmarsh and mangrove in Yueqing Bay, China

Runqiu Huang et al.

Summary: This study examines the records of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in sediment profiles from different blue carbon vegetation types in Yueqing Bay, China. The results show that blue carbon vegetation accelerates the burial of PAHs in sediments and affects their accumulation and retention capacity. Additionally, blue carbon vegetation colonization contributes to changes in the composition of PAHs in sediments.

Summary: Mangroves and saltmarshes in Yueqing Bay, China, were found to have higher concentrations of trace elements compared to other habitats. After colonization by vegetation, the concentrations of certain trace elements increased significantly. The sources of these trace elements were found to be both natural and anthropogenic.

Summary: The concentration of heavy metals in different organs of mangroves varies, with roots containing the most. The three mangrove species showed weak concentration capacity, withCeriops tagalbeing the best at distributing heavy metals. This study provides insight into the bioavailability of heavy metals in sediments for ecosystem protection in mangrove wetlands.

Spatial variations and potential risks of heavy metals in sediments of Yueqing Bay, China

Weimin Yao et al.

Summary: This study assessed spatial variations and potential risks of heavy metals in sediments of Yueqing Bay by examining the relationship between metal concentrations and sediment physiochemical factors. Higher sediment metal concentrations were found in the inner bay compared to the central and outer bay, with some metals posing moderate ecological risks. Multivariate statistical analysis suggested that sediment texture, total organic carbon, and petroleum hydrocarbons had a significant influence on the distribution and fate of metals.

Summary: The study evaluated the spatial distribution and potential ecological risks of potentially toxic elements in sediment samples from the Qingfeng River. It identified Sb and As as the major pollutants, with very high potential ecological risks, and determined that human activities were the main sources of PTEs in the sediments. Measures should be taken to control and resolve the PTE pollution in the Qingfeng River at the source.

Soil metal pollution assessment in Sarcocornia salt marshes in a South American estuary

Vanesa L. Negrin et al.

Summary: The study evaluated soil metal pollution in two Sarcocornia salt marshes within the Bahia Blanca estuary in Argentina through pseudo-total and bioavailable metal levels and pollution indexes. The distribution patterns of bioavailable metals varied between salt marshes, with organic matter playing a key role in metal distribution. Using local background values provided a better assessment of anthropogenic metal enrichment and moderate pollution levels in salt marsh soils compared to using average background levels.

Trace metal contamination in soils from mountain regions across China: spatial distribution, sources, and potential drivers

Haijian Bing et al.

Summary: This study reveals that Cd and Pb contamination in mountain soils is a major concern, while other trace metals do not show significant contamination. The primary sources of Cd and Pb are long-range transboundary atmospheric transport and condensation, as well as anthropogenic activities such as ore mining, nonferrous smelting, and combustion. Monitoring of trace metal contamination is essential for improving biogeochemical models and understanding responses to future environmental changes.
